Things you've done that HHO members might not like....

Chirst....

Have crank noseband..and use it.
Ride in spurs about 95% of the time
Ride with spurs, a crop and a gag for hutning.
Full clip and still make them live out 24/7
Only vaccinate the hunters
Clean my tack about once every 6 weeks
Don't own a tie ring, have taught them all to stand on the deck at the back door loose.
Travel 2 in a box with no partition
Have bute and sedalin to hand..minus a prescription
Have free access to needles and syringes...not from a vet
Have lost my temper with the mare before and left in her in the lorry tack up and untied while I calmed down
Change feed without a intro period
Worm as and when counts show, not when the box says to

I have done all that! I think its like a cathartic release to know other people have some non BHS methods!

ooo well where do i start:

taken stick to horse in stable as he rushed me with teeth and was going to collect me - No way I'am having that there far to big and dangerous to start that behaviour - i like being alive

Draw rein, with spurs and double whip - sooo... naughty

Only feed hard food when doing proper work (ie comp or getting ready for them) - shock horror

Left rugs off all summer - they have coat themselfs???

If a gaget work for the horse - i use it

If schooling and horse doesn't go off leg use stick behind leg, as must respect my legs

Only were body protect from xc cos rules say i have too

and have been know to school without hat!!!!!!!!!!!

lots more but can't think........

Just to add...

I own THREE sets of draw reins and have ridden numerous horses in them
I never wear a hat when not on the horse

Oh,...and...

I have possibly thrown the headcollar and leadrope at a horse that was ebign arsey to catch and hit it firmly on the nose. (Not proud of that one but it was an hour and a half later)

Don’t wear a hat when schooling
Have beaten the living daylights out of past horses - but only when they were absolute sods - not for fun
Have ridden horse into lorry when it wouldn’t load
Lunge without wearing a hat
Ride XC in a Pelham and Grackle and spurs
My old cowbag is lame, permanently.
Have jumped wire many times out hunting - In New Zealand it’s the Norm!
Adminsiter Bute, penicillin etc when I think its needed. Vet trusts me and supply me with what I need on request
Cowbag has not had her back checked for 4 years plus - FFS its retired!
Don’t change the saddle for each horse, simply add on or take away numnahs and pads. You don’t see the top profs having a different saddle for each ponio do you?
Have been known to just brush the necessary part of horse before riding
Evented a horse on bran and pony nuts.

I could go on and on - but would probably get the wrathe of the fluffy brigade!

I hadn't heard the one about not trotting on roads.
I never get on off the floor - but he is quite big.
I used to have a horse that could lunge without a lunge line perfect 20m circles and you just stood in the middle without getting dizzy

[QUICKY REPLY]

Whats wrong with trotting on the road??!

I think its an old wives tale to do with Navicular disease.
However, I stand to be corrected.
I do trot on the roads.

[/ QUOTE ]

My old instructor had me trotting on the road, was told its easier on the horse to trot up a hill than walking up it

Oh dear. I'm obviously a complete chav because I like John Whitaker tack.
I also like sheepskin lined boots, half numnahs etc.
I ride friend's horse in a dutch gag on the bottom ring, with one rein, and a martingale on.
I use a training rein both riding and lunging sometimes (I would use a Pessoa when lunging but I can't afford one).
Yearlings tail hasn't been brushed through in his life, neither has he been bathed/trimmed/pulled etc.
Don't own any rugs for the Welsh Cob yearling, much to the horror of other liveries (it's still summer!?).
Do incredibly "silly" things when getting on and off horses, vaulting on and hanging on to the door frame etc.
Feed horse polos - by hand!

and it still doesn't bite.
Ach I do lots of things, but it makes me happy, and it's the way I like to enjoy horses.

Wahay good post here goes ...

Bought an expensive horse for my inexperience to ruin
Have nice tack and am not yet competing
Have her on full livery and dont go and see her everyday and sometimes have her ridden for me
Turn her out in the school
Have her stabled full time with limited turn out
Other people calculate my feed, and organise other stuff like jabs, wormers, shoes etc..
Only have one lesson a week
Look at the style of rug first before seeing if it is suitable
Only buy the rugs I like
Use an elasticated girth
Ride in a stubben saddle

Oh the list goes on lol

Ready...aim.... too late Im gone.

Use a dutch gag on the second hole with one rein
Never wear a hat when handling or lunging Castle
Sometimes do flatwork and jumping with just a beagler on

I like this thread! I've:
Never had a back person out
Worm, but not exactly by the book
Haven't vaccinated my old girl and don't have the farrier out to her - her unshod feet sort themselves out
Thwack my Welshie when she is being a cowbag - and don't feel guilty for it
Change over feed without 'introducing' it first
ride in wellies when it is muddy and I can't be arsed to swop to my jod boots
Own no type of boot for my girl at all - or rug
Erm, can't think of any more off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are loads more.
It is interesting to read this post - people are far less angelic than I though they would be! So relieved

Ride in the ' dreaded' 3 ring gag with no curbstrap and only one rein
shocked.gif

Only turn out 4 days a week winter and summer
Keep my horse in a field where one fence is barbed wire ( Though do have electric running across the top)

And as Tia pointed out, don't give a toss as Ive had him 23 years so can't be doing TOO much wrong!!
grin.gif

Jeeesh....

Used to introduce new things ie saddle rug etc to youngster in field all by my self..bitted her in field...leaned over off a fence by my self
Rode in field with just headcollar
Used whip excessivly on horse when misbehaved
Used to sneak rides on the unridable pony....
Cantered/trotted on hard ground
Use mobile on road..trotted up main road texting with one hand on reins reins loose....
If it was upto me I wouldn't boot
Don't wear hat to lunge/load
TB youngsters and mare live out unrugged...shock horror
Ridden in Harbrough and draw reins and kimblwick with curb very tight

And alot more I am not saying!!

Ok,
*I think nothing of giving a horse a right hook if they even think of doing anything untoward to me (they dont do it again in a hurry).
*Smoke and text on horseback (my old boss knew the breakers were quiet enough for him as soon as I started texting off them).
*Leave headcollars on in the stable (spending 1/2 hour a day trying to catch the beggers is all very good and well, but bear in mind I usually have another 5 to ride).
*Never lunge in a hat, but always gloves (you try lunging toss#rs in a 20 acre field - I have yet to let go of one).
*IV and IM myself (my vet knows its bad if I say anything but 'im coming to get some penicillin/dope etc).
*Pin fire and blister horses (when you have seen 100's of horses treated this way, then come and tell me it doesnt work).
*I dont think every day turnout is beneficial for all horses (you try working your boll#x off every morning, then going for a walk in pi55ing down rain/wind/flies).
*Very rarely use a roller for breaking in horses, and quite often no brow band (dont see the point in rollers, and why spend hours pi55ing about with a BB when they dont like it? It will come in its own time within a couple of weeks).
*Most common item of tack used is a running martingale (however, try finding anything other than any type of snaffle in my tack room and you will be disapointed).
*Have no qualms about pulling a proper tw#t over backwards when lungeing for breaking in (have yet to find one that doesnt cop on immediately afterwards).
*Dont even own a caveasson (most useless piece of kit ever invented).
Sure I can think of some more....

"Can someone tell me whats wrong with shoeing your horse?"

Are you talking about doing it yourself?
Isn't it illegal if you aren't a qualified farrier?

If I'd ever seen a 'home' shod horse that had had a good job done on it I'd have a good chuckle with everyone else - but frankly every case I've seen has been a right pigs ear and the horses are usually foot sore!

Not to be a total party pooper..

Don't worm either - she gets egular egg count instead [last one at zero]

Never use a noseband - she doesnt need one so I just bung the bridle on over her headcollar
Have been known to light up a fag whilst mounted - what a pikey!

LOL!

This post has had me in stiches

Isn't it funny how wearing certain items of clothing or tack can have you branded a certain type of person!

Must admit I DO occasionally look at people and make snap judgement - v bad I know but I thknkit's human nature. And it's often quite inaccurate
crazy.gif

I think the thing that I do that certain people at my yard would rown upon to say the least is to smoke whilst riding/mobile whilst riding. I also ride in my skinny jeans and trainers sometimes
blush.gif

Like someone said - if it's not putting other people in danger and your horse isn't miserable then we should get back to the old days of not being so PC ALL THE TIME!

I school without a hat
My horse wears brushing boots AND over reach boots when schooling
I ride in draw reins
I never wear a hat or gloves when lunging and I use side reins instead of a pessoa
I want a diamonte browband to compete in
I wear trainers when doing groundwork with my horse
Theres probably loads more but who cares

[/ QUOTE ] I don't think people were talking about shoeing their own horses - just that in some 'barefoot' circles it is thought to be verging on cruelty if you have your horse shod
