he came in sore yesterday morning.. hes not crippled , just feeling it... on very restricted grazing.. just found out someone has been steeling other peoples feed and going round feeding him... the only food on the yard is high fibre cubes, conditioning cubes, and caff of some sort.... got vet coming in the morning, might ask him to check his cushings again, and his ir... so angry, not sure what to do anymore?... hes on prascend.... if it turns out its the feed can i send her the bill?? ...
 
Sorry to hear that, if i was in your position i would be furious!! How dare anyone think it ok to feed your horse without your say so, and yep the bill would be going straight to that person. Unfortunately proving that was the main factor could be difficult. grrr so angry on your behalf!!

I would find out who has fed him and have words.


Could you have a sign made up with

(Please don't feed this pony he is under vets care and must not have any type of feed or tip bits as it could potentially kill him)



Does he have a muzzle???
What actually is his field like (size length of grass):)
Does he have a muzzle??

I would be inclined to search for another yard ( just get feelers out )

As you know about my mare I too would be kicking a$$ if I found some one do that to my mare.


They may think its good to feed pony / feel sorry but do they know the dangers of doing this?? maybe this should be put too them explain how dangers of it.

My enemy at the moment with my mare is serious form of thrush its proving hard to kill the bacteria's.
Its not a normal one that I have dealt with before

vets been, its not laminitis phew!!!:D he has a sign on his door saying he has cushing and ir prone to lammi...... i will be having words, vet was angry, as we have worked so hard to get him where he is today.... i love the yard i am not moving him... hes on poor grazing, very bare, thin strip... out at night in by day... vet was happy he saw the paddock. and is fine with it.... Leviathan tango is a little thrushy, he gave me some really good stuff for it.. antibac its eucalyptus oil and iodophorm...

Thats a relief..Antibac is very good.. but my god it's expensive.lol
 
I can't imagine an actual bare paddock in these weather conditons unless you mean actual non grass paddock and you are feeding hay. The grass is probably even more lethal when it's just shoots being eaten immediately. I would keep TOTALLY OFF GRASS for a few days and see what you get then before I discounted laminitis myself. Also feed would more then likely have mollasses in somewhere Good luck!!

Having had a Cushing's pony prone to laminitis, I can vouch for the fact laminitis strikes randomly and regardless of feed. It's not just linked solely to feed. It is the pituitary enlargement which stops regulating the production and release of cortisol and if your pony is also suffering from EMS (possible to likely) the fatty deposits and their toxic hormone production also contributing to the composition of the blood, which trigger an attack of laminitis.

I LOVE how vets can simply look and say 'it's not laminitis'. If it looks like laminitis, it probably is. Or azoturia. Is it likely to be azoturia?

What made YOU think it was laminitis? If I were you, I'd be on laminitis lockdown, til you are certain. Past experience tells me laminitis is never ever far from the surface in these ponies. Sadly.
 
he was just sore.. vet has been looking after this pony for a long time, so he knows him very well....i;ve had him 10 yrs. delt with laminitis 3-4 times with him.. its not laminitis this time....

I'm all for taking grass out of the equasion all together. I thought this horse was on a completely cereal and molasses feed diet anyway, or am I mixing it up with some other?
 
he is sore .. a pre warning curser for lami. esp as he has been diagnosed with cushings and IR. the grass is growing like stink at the moment plus you have the autumn flush coming on, plus the autumnal acth changes coming through. sounds like he needs a few days on box rest (with the help of someone else eating his sparse grazing!!) however I am glad you are sure that it isnt lami this time! so what is it? an abcess?
 
That's fab news but while I would never call u stupid Hifi lite contains Alfafa, cereal straw, cane mollassses and mould inhibitor. I would read the bag and change diet to avoid any future "soreness " great to hear all good at the moment though!

i have just started him on formular 4 feet.. hope thats ok ? i've never used it before vet recommended it....
 
Not sure about formula for feet I think it looks like it has a lot in it but seems quite pricey...... In my limited experience I think you might be better off forgave testing and then feeding what you are lacking in at the correct ratios rather then something so general that it covers all areas as all grazing and hay in the uk vary. It would also be cheaper in the long run to just feed what u need!

Hifi lite is about 4% sugar as far as I'm aware, I don't use this for lamanitics because of the sugar content. Even though 4% isn't much compared to some others I'd rather not risk it.
