18 weeks into pregnancy and my left leg feels like its doing it's very best to fall off!!

Anyone know of any good pelvic/hip exercises to strengthen and allow me to carry on, or am I going to have to face facts and just stick to mooching in hand and lunging until next spring? :(

Sorry I can't help, but I had to give up riding at 23 weeks as I was just too huge. If it's any consollation I was back riding 7 weeks after a c-section and time does go by quickly...honest, it does!!

I had to stop riding at 19 weeks with the same problem, left leg felt like it was falling off. It actually turned into sciatica and time off work. I got back on after 2 weeks (last week) and managed a walking hack up the road, but I felt so ungainly in my wobbly bumpy belly that I have hung up my saddle! Luckily I have found a sharer to ride horse so she has taken over.

I had problems with my left hip before falling pregnant, physio gave me exercises to do to stregthen weakened muscles and I have been advised to continue these while pregnant. Very simple, just lying on your back raising your left leg but only so far as it goes before it clicks (I have clicky hips). But my problem will be different to yours so you need to see your physio really - but they will probably tell you to quit riding now anyway!!!!!
I feel less inclined to ride after my 20 weeks scan anyway - baby seems very real now I can feel him kicking my insides to bits. I do miss riding but I am more worried about getting jolted than falling off! Because that will bring back my sciatica!!!!

Doctor just told me to take paracetamol and keep moving...can't get up and down stairs today and haven't gone to work - prob doesn't help that it's cold today - but as my boss is pregnant too and having no problems she's not really being very understanding. Makes me feel awful and don't know what else to do!

Oh dear poor you!!!!! I spent 3 days sitting in a chair watching the WORST daytime tv, it was truly awful, couldn;t see my horse or even leave the house. BUT with rest it did ease. The doctor was happy to sign me off from work but I was able to go back. I am an infant teacher though so he was concerned about me doing too much bending down!!!
You could try jiggling/moving the baby because the doc thinks my little guy was lying on a nerve! I am now getting twinges in my RIGHT hip - little monkey must have moved! I am also on the sick though due to very low blood pressure today :(

Pregnancy is NOT easy! But no it doesn;t help if your boss is doing fine!

Hi - sorry to hear you are having riding problems. With my last pregnancy a rode up till about 27 weeks although in fairness the last 5 or 6 were just very gentle mooching. I stopped when getting on and off became difficult and my bladder just coudnt cope with anything more than walk.

This time I am now at 16 weeks and getting hip pain after I dismount and the odd shooting pain down my right leg post riding. I ride a lot less know, probably only 2 times a week so I am hoping I can hang on a bit longer.

Bit mean of your boss not to be supportive - even if she feels well she should know all about the myriad of complaints that can go hand in hand with being a baby factory and that all pregnancies are different. I know this one has been sooo much worse than my previous two. Perhaps her next one wont be as easy

Thanks for the kind responses, guess I just need to rest a bit more than I have been doing!

I've also discovered I'm not bad at playing along to Countdown on telly! Lol!

Heya, Im much more of a lurker than a poster...

Im 24 weeks pregnant but got the same back/ hip issues- really struggling at the mo :-( Still riding at the mo but paying for it afterwards each time! The miswife has mentioned mine could be SPD?

Dont really want to give up as dont want my boy sat in field all winter (Im sure he wouldnt be complaining though!). Tried the sharer route when first found out I was pg-my normally angelic horse decided that he was a mummys boy and first sharer lasted one day (!) and second fared slightly better and it was two weeks before she quit. Really dont think its worth going down the sharer route again, esp at this time of year....

The joys of pregancy hey?!

Oh, I do feel for you! I'm only at 16 weeks and I am still physically ok, but I am sitting here at my desk feeling too damn tired to go to the yard, even to lunge! I am trying to motivate myself but after a full day in the office and it's dark and cold, I am not sure I can face it! Pregnancy first time was ok but this time I am exhausted.

How about yoga or pilates for your hip?

VIKKIL As a sharer in the past we not all that bad hun there are some that will go above and beyond the call of duty I did for four yrs plus in all weathers so dont give up yet. and if you find that person dont take them for granted and hold on to them.

If your horse is that senstive maybe give him the winter off. He may enjoy it.

Thanks HandleyCross. We had a great one about 5 years ago who was with us for quite a while, so I know they are around somewhere. His adverts are still up so if someone replies and it works out then great, if not Im not going to actively look and he shall be having a winter break (and possibly most of next year or so lol) :D Just shame he can be such a sod....

VikkiL I found a sharer for mine, yes I had to compromise and go for someone who is 13, but she is very keen, lives round the corner and I have been able to help her from the ground and teach her how to ride and handle my boy, who can be quirky. She has supervision at the yard and she loves him to bits... I am HOPING she will stay on once baby is born, as I am worried about having time to ride.
Just really hard seeing someone else riding my gorgeous boy but I know it's for the best.

OP I found Pilates REALLY helpful though I had been going to classes before I fell pregnant so I know many of the routines. I got a prenatal pilates DVD to work through, lots of the principles have helped and certainly I know how to lift, muck out etc in a way that avoids my sciatica getting too bad.
But be careful, it's not work damaging yourself.

Totally feel your pain... I am now 34 weeks pregnant and stopped riding 5 weeks ago. I feel horrid now, like a great big stuffed christmas turkey! Go and tell your midwife about the pain in the left leg, I also had this from weeks 17-24 and they thought it might be pelvic girdle? Was given some co-codamol and felt MUCH better, one day it was so bad I couldn't get out of bed, the oddest thing! Then one morning I woke up and it had gone, and (fingers crossed) is yet to return! Good luck! I am soooo fed up now its crazy!
