got down this morning & moved the ponies to fresh grazing.
once id moved the elcetric across i found a patch of evil yellow plantlife (Ragwort) but couldnt be doing with another drive home to get new gloves (old ones are beond dead now) so i pulled it up by hand but now i feel quite lightheaded & dizzy.

i know better & always shout at the kids when they pull the stuff without gloves.

You've got me there...we used to pull tons of the stuff when I was younger, no mention of gloves and don't remember feeling ill...what does it do to you?

How on earth much did you pull by hand then. It would normally take quite a lot to cause a reaction like you are describing.

Wow, you must be a sensitive person! (But then again I know you are :-) ) Am fully aware that you're supposed to wear gloves to handle ragwort - and I do if I'm doing a major ragwort overhaul, but I pull it with my bare hands all of the time if I happen to walk past the odd plant here and there, and have never suffered any dizziness. (That's not to say we should all do what I do - because I realise it could have a culmulative effect).

I hope the dizziness doesn't last too long hun. Now, as soon as you get a chance, go get yourself a new pair of gloves and don't go doing as Faro does!

i never use gloves and always touch wood been ok.
eat something with sugar in it and rest abit and dirnk pleanty water.

Sounds more like placebo effect....you would need to pull up acres of the stuff for it to have an effect on you!

ive got quite a lot of open wounds on my left hand at present (neighbours dog & my chooks had a bit of a setto) & i also have a low imune system (Anqua2 helped get the issues diagnosed).

i should (& do) know better so now feeling a bit of a plank & sorry for myself.

You didn't chew on it did you?!!? :D

I don't think pulling up one patch of plants with your hands would make you light headed and dizzy.

Make sure you drink plenty of water and if you still feel like this then call NHS direct to speak to a nurse.

you might be just highly suggestible like me. I pulled up some deadly nightshade the other day and spent a good hour or two convinced I was on my way out. ;)

I nearly always pull it up without gloves, unless I am going out to do a proper pulling session and have gloves prepared!! Blimey, you must be allergic to it or something... You didn't squish any of those black and yellow ragwort catapillars did you as they can be quite nasty??

Aoibhin Im pretty sure you will be fine if it was a one off. For those who often pull the evil yellow stuff up without gloves - probably best not to! The toxins can be absorbed through the skin and ragwort poisoning is cumulative. This is one reason why it is such a problem with horses: a little ragwort regularly is just as dangerous as a lot all at once. According to my vet livers (ours and neds') can't break down the toxins and eventually they start to cause damage.

I think it would take a lot of ragwort pulling to cause a problem...but then I for one do pull a lot of ragwort!

that Steorra is where i should know better where we used to be it was awash with the stuff & have spent god knows how many hours pulling the damned stuff up in my youth (never with gloves untill Grandad caught us) but advancing years & weakend immune means i now watch what im up to normally.

but then again my liver is proberly pickled from all my boozy nights out clubbing when i was younger ;)
