think i may have had the last straw tonight. i honestly dont think i can continue to do this anymore. my fighting spirit has gone, i have been humiliated for the last time today by my mare. i can't sell her,loan her and her sweet itch is very very horrific.i break my back for her and get nothing in return. i've tried trad methods, natural methods, professional help, vet help, still nout changes. she doesn't enjoy/want to do ANYTHING. going to consult vet on monday, options are fast running out.

sorry for such a down post but i'm finding it difficult to see a way out now

severe sweet itch and allergys from a medical point of view. from a behaviour point, napping, bad attitude, rearing, reversing,seperation anxioty (sp), planting, spinning, too clever, massive lack of enthusisam
 
I had a mare with sweet itch and she had all sorts of behaviours which I could trace directly to her feeling horrible and itchy. she couldn't bear even the weight of the numnah on her back and just wanted to scratch the whole time. She was utterly miserable and I couldn't work her while she had it. She was a 15.3 TBxWB - not your average SI sufferer.
You have my sympathy - it's very hard to know what to do - she was miserable and itchy stabled - just rubbed herself the whole time - and galloped incessantly when out in the field.

6 yrs now had since 6 months old. has been tricky since day one but grad getting worse.vet can't find anything- x-rays also show nothing, she's already on regumate. i've had horses around 17 years my mum has had all her life, horsey family, prev been on RC teams etc with my old horse. my good friend is a BHS inst who has been involved all the way.x

no other horse has made me feel like this!
 
She lived in a fly rug from march to october - lived out in field with electric tape, was smothered in Net-tex fly cream and Itch stop cream as I couldn't spray her (she'd come at me with her front feet if I tried!) and I made sure she got well covered before the flies started. I had to seriously under rug her all year round cos she was worse when hot. Also I put Camrosa everywhere she began to itch. Huge quantities of all creams and ointments - made her rugs disgusting - but she was rideable ( not competable cos she looked so grim) and her mane/tail just about survived. she also got hot in her fly rug so it rubbed the skin off her shoulders. the other thing that made a difference was her weight - much worse when she looked good - had to strip the weight off!. Not a fun time for her or me!
when I got her, the previous owner said she was sensitive to fly bites.......

so not much help but know when u feel like this you think you are the only one in the world to have a horse like this, so just to let you know there are 2 of us!

The severe sweet itch and allergies could make her feel very very grumpy and lethargic - this could explain why she is so stroppy under saddle? They can get pretty depressed about it as you would if you were seriously itchy and allergic all the time!! I would really aim to try and sort these vet issues first before attempting the ridden ones.
 
IMO, you need to sort the sweet itch out asap. My boy has severe sweet itch...to the point that he was unridable at one point. He couldn't ever stand still, would push, shove and barge and had so may sore points that I couldn't get any tack on him. I considered pts at one point as he was so miserable.

I have now moved him somewhere more suitable, an exposed field away from water and muckheaps...he wears a Boett/Fly rug all summer and Net Tex Stop itch on exposed areas.
He is a different horse and I am now riding and enjoying him. He still has his moments. I don't like riding him in woody areas as he gets stressed and fidgety and he is still a bit argy bargy on midgy days but on the whole he is happy.

Can you imagine what life is like to be itchy every moment of your life...it would make you pretty cranky too
