2 questions :confused: My horse had bad accident in field and has nasty laceration on his hind leg from electic fencing. The wound was stapled and stitched and hes now out in his paddock but every time the wound seems to get good dry scab the next time I see it its open again ,I think hes rubbing or chewing scab. The wound is over a joint so I realise its going to take longer to fully heal and hes 99% there.Anyone have any ideas what I can do to stop him or ease what I imagine is itching dry skin. I have use hydra gel and now using aloe vera,I stopped cold hosing as I thought it was drying wound too much. Will ring vet if he continues although its improving in size.he will let me brush around area but still suspicious and scared if I go anywhere near wound .
My other issue is he has to have shoe off now he has mobility in leg and Ive been waiting until hes comfortable ,when I ask him to lift his leg (practising for farrier hes only 4 1/2) he now lifts from hip .Hoping farrier can get shoe off in morning ,not worried about having shoes on hinds but this foot will need trimming and he looks like tripod going to fall over.

My arab ripped half of her leg open a few months back and I was in your position - getting to the final stages then 'somehow' it'd keep coming off - until the day I actually saw her bringing her back leg right up to her teeth and itching resulting in no more scab!!

I used the tubular bandages that some people would use as a knee support? They're £1 from somewhere like poundland or quality save ... hold one end, cut horizontally so you have say three little tubular sections (make your money last!), put it over her hoof and pull up so its covering the scab and secure (if heeds be) with self stick bandage or similar - my vet told me to do this and then twice a day wash with salt water until scab is off ... they're the perfect fit too so may not even need securing but keeps all the mud off!

P.s the whole leg lifting will stop as it heals more - mine did this too - ridiculous girl ha!!

that's great idea but there is no way on this earth that he will let me do that lol.I had farrier out and we sedated just shoes on fronts at moment and whilst he was sedated slapped huge blob of aloe vera and he hasn't bitten it all day in his stable. He has small sarcoid and hes biting that as well .Blasted horses bet its heat making it drier as well .:( glad Im not only one that been through it ;)
