after my nice hack on the beach, was rugging up and settling them down for the night and noticed a big swelling on my tbs nose :-( its warm and hes not keen on me touching it. Have given him a danilon for the night and will ring the vet in the morning if it hasnt gone down. Typical the vet was only out this morn. My mare escaped in with him last night but shes not really one to kick out at him. But he plays rough with the mini shetland so i think this is the case. I just hope its soft tissue :-(
not a great pic but you can see the bulge of swelling on the front of his nose, that extends evenly right round.

ouch! keep an eye on that and his breathing. hope he is better soon :-)

I watched him eat his tea and had abit of a panic because thought i heard him breathing strange but then it stopped so dont know if my ears were playing tricks on me as i didnt hear it again afterward! Annoying as this is a set back for him to come back into work. he has been off for a year.

One of ours came in from the field with a swelling the size of an avocado on the front/side of his nose, just below his sinus cavity, and just a scrape of hair missing. Vet came and said he'd never seen that before and to keep an eye on it but at that time it didn't appear to be interfering with his breathing etc so not to worry.

It gradually got bigger and then after about 4 days it developed a small pin prick hole and started to ooze puss. He went to be scanned and xrayed, and it turns out he had a small sequestrum forming (dying bone) which presumably was from a very hard impact with something.

He was going to be operated on once he had finished the antibiotics and stopping pussing. At it turned out the lump started to go down and when scanned etc again the vet decided the body was healing itself and to leave it to see how it went. This was good news for us as we'd only just been through an op and box rest with him when he got a sequestrum above a fetlock which cost us £10K  and he is uninsured.

Anyhow, long story short, the swelling is reduced but will take approx 4-6 months to go completely (if it does). He is ridden normally, just taking care not to put pressure on the lump.

Take your vet's advice (it may not be a kick at all?) and I'm sure it'll all be fine. Good luck x

Hi all, just an update, The swelling doesnt look to have gone down, its hard and warm and appears the left side of his face up his jaw is abit swollen. Hes not keen on me touching it. Spoke to the vet this morning and he said to give him some more danilon today and 2moro and see what it looks like then once its had a chance to kick in. Hes feeling abit sorry for himself. Hes eating and drinking fine which is the main thing.

China, maybe he knew he was coming back to work and decided he needs more time in the field ;-) shetlands are very helpful critters lol

He has been doing short walks inhand up the road so he ovbiously caught on ;-) He is clearly enjoying a life of leisure in the field!

Hi,

I've got a horse that got a large swelling down the side of the front of his face ( if that makes sense?!). Looked a bit like that picture. Anyhoo, turns out if was a tooth abscess, he had the tooth out and was on antibiotics, he's now good as new and everything has healed up perfectly.

quick update: Not much improvement 2nite. From the corner of his mouth upwards over his teeth is very swollen but no discharge from nose and eyes are fine. Vets coming out 2moro to take a look and see if we can find a cause. For now hes had 2 danilon 2nite to keep him confortable.
