Think someone is nicking my haylage

It depends if you think she might nick it from others instead. I'd certainly be giving my YO a heads up to keep an eye.

I'm not sure because this is my first winter at the yard and I'm don't know if she was just taking the pee. She has been there ages and is in the YOs back pocket so I'm worried if I mention something it will be taken the wrong way. :(

I feel for you OP. I would have a little word with YO as she might be suffering the same problem with other feed. I know that my YO would be much happier knowing there might be someone who is a little light fingered. It it so unfair to have someone helping them sleves to something that is not theres.

I suffered with a light fingered hard foor thief a few years ago. I put some large rat traps in the feed bin. Within a few days I had a comment from someone asking why I had rat traps in my feed bin. I asked and just how do you know that? She went bright red and tried to get herself out of the hole she had just opened. I quietly pointed out as it was my feed bin the only person going in it was me or OH. After this I got a lockable chest feed bin. I let the YO know she kept and eye open.

But how do you know it is this one particular person?

Unsubstantiated accusations are dangerous things.

I suspect that now your bale is out of reach, someone else will be on the receiving end, this may well brings things out in the open.

This^

You have resolves it for yourself, so leave it be. Poking a finger into a hornets nest is foolish when it is not needed and you no longer need to do it. If someone else does, that's their call and they can deal with the fallout.

I put a note inside my feed bin 'please do not steal my food' And someone left a note 'we don't feed our horses rabbit food (it was the first ever mix available in the bin). Oh yeah? So how did you know my note was in there then??? I chained it up after that.

Yes I don't think I'll mention it. And I would NEVER say who I thought it was because obviously I have no proof! I'm just happy we're no longer going through a 36 quid bale of haylage every 6 days :D

Mine stopped going missing when I brought a load of haynets, made it obvious I was weighing them, made up all the haylage and put the keyrings you write on each net saying "horses name 1, horses name 2" and so on and made sure to use them in order. Or make up haynets and throw them in a locked shed!

I'd be tempted to tell the YM its been going but has now stopped since you took action, but say you're just telling her so she knows in case there are any other problems. As far you're concerned its dealt with and you don't want anything done about it, especially as you don't know who has been taking it.
