Stanley was scooped clear of his pyloric ulcers in May and we gradually weaned him off gg...it's now august and the nervous wreck behaviour is back with a vengeance, gradually getting worse over the last fortnight or so. I would say he is pretty much unrideable again now....his nerves are shredded( as are mine). He feels like a coiled spring, spooking at everything! even a car passing very slow and wide spoked a major melt down today.

I am gonna book ANOTHER scope in for this week but sat here worrying in the meantime. The insurance claim is nearly maxed out on this and I still don't have a horse I can even ride... I know that sounds selfish but I am so down and frustrated. I have done everything the vets said re management. Ad lib fibre all the time, no sugar in his diet... It has been a nightmare as he is a good doer who puts on weight at the drop of a hat.

Anyone got experience of ulcers returning? Give me some hope ....please!

Please don't panic-my boy had grade 2 and 3 Squamous and Pyloric Ulcers-used up all the Insurance would pay-after GG put him on supplements etc to keep them at bay-they worked for about 7 months then the spooking, sharp silly behaviour began-even spooked so badly at a competition before Christmas that he had me off.Totally unheard of!.My nerves were also going and he even started to get silly to handle.Had been reading up about all the supplements etc and my other issue was that he was diagnosed EMS so had to control Ulcers and EMS.After a very long conversation with Deborah from Equine Science I decided to drop all other supplements and give it a go-it was expensive for a month but still a huge amount cheaper than GG-even my non horsey husband said it was worth a go and if worked was cheaper than all the supplements per month which weren't working!.Did exactly what Deborah said-when started I kept off him for 10 days, just lunging and loosing, after 3 days he was notably quieter to handle, even looked more relaxed in the eye, after 10 days I was back on him and was 80% back to having my horse back-after 2 weeks he was back. All silly behaviour gone.He then went on the Maintenance with Calmer and has not looked back-has been getting 70% plus in Prelim Affiliated, got a fantastic 10th at the Regionals 10 days ago even using the Calmer Cookies which really work,he has done 5 Affiliated Novices-got 21 points from 5 tests,Area Festival Sheets done in two outings. He is now so excepting of his work and looks unbelievable-really cannot recommend this product enough.Apologies for the essay!

Thank you. Actually got teary reading that. It helps to know that the anxious behaviour occurred with your horse too. People were looking at me like I was being neurotic, but I just feel sure it's an indicator of the ulcers. Thanks for the reccomendation. Any thing that works is well worth it! Think my non horsey oh is sick of this too!

I have to say that it is very hard as my boy didn't show the "typical ulcer symptoms"-he was very stressy, spooky and whenever you tried to turn tight he would just bolt. You know your horse and just message me if you want to ask anything.I really could not believe the difference in using this product-Deborah is fantastic and is definetly worth a call-they have a good website and I emailed her on a Saturday and she asked if she could call me straight away. They also have a Facebook page which has a lot of testimonials from owners especially about the Gastroplus and Calming Cookies. As I say,my boy did not have typical symptoms and I just "knew" it was the Ulcers.I did not even get him re scoped when I had a feeling they had reoccurred as the Insurance wouldn't cover it-I would have paid but knew we would then have to go down the GG route again so hence decided to go the Gastroplus route and we haven't looked back!.

Thank you. That's so kind of you. I hadn't thought of just trying something like a new treatment and not having him rescoped but I guess it is an option! I am gonna check with the insurance how much I have left on the claim, it might cover a scope but certainly not the gg. Part of me wants to see what I am dealing with as I think it may be worse than last time going by his reaction.

Hi i have been reading your posts with interest, as i think my boy has ulcers, he is showing all the signs. I have been getting as much info as possible to try to make the right decisions, regarding his treatment. There seems to be so many different views i'm a bit confused. Have spoken to my vet briefly who recommended GG but also said that as soon as the treatment is finished the ulcers return ...( sometimes even worse)...... even with careful management. Seems like a waste of time and money really, or a huge let down as things improve for a short while only to return to square one again.... so was looking for an alternate route with proven long term results.
Any thoughts gratefully received ..... Thanks

Hi

Well as an update, my boy is going to be rescoped on Thursday. Gastrogard certainly worked last time as he was clear on rescope but I think we have only had at most a couple of ulcer free months before I started noticing symptoms again despite managing him exactly as the vet said. So I will know on Thursday for sure whether they have come back but not sure if I will go the gastrogard route again as I can't afford for him to be on it forever and not sure how good that would be for him in the long term anyway. I have heard long term use of gastrogard can compromise the hind gut.
