Thinking about a Haffie pros and cons?

we have 3 in the village, all fab characters, friendly, calm, capable and hardy. Plenty of character, and as said they need firm but fair handling, but I can't say a bad word about them.

I loved my Haffy, I sold her a couple of years ago as she was such a steady eddy that I got a bit bored riding her having been used to my Arab x welsh. I regret selling her really as she turned her hoof to anything albeit she was no worldbeater, she would try and was so reliable. I could have sold her 5 times over. She was cheap to keep but was like an overgrown Shetland lol and would drag me and barge until I put her in a dually. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, a true family type pony.

Mine is my horse (pony) of a lifetime. He isn't bargy at all, is very sensitive and lives to please you. He will jump up to about 4', and is schooling at elementary - learning half passes etc and I'm aiming to teach him passage if I can just get him to relax a bit! On the ground his manners are perfect and my 3 year old leads him around. Am currently teaching him to ground tie and various other 'tricks' to make him easy to have around with my daughter on her pony. He is really clever and loves to please.

He is very sharp, very lively and can be strong but not in a rude way, just over excited and full of himself! He would never dream of bucking/rearing/tanking off but will spook if he doesn't think the rider is going to take care of him! I also use him on the riding school for the youngsters that want a push button jumping pony to get confident over bigger fences as he is 100% honest.

Just because he is beautiful (not that I am biased!)

Another Haffie lover here :D

The only con I can think of is that one is not enough!

Mine is a 13.2 gelding, and he is amazing. He is not a bargy type but I instilled manners into him from day one and he is a dream to handle.

He is very cheeky and sometimes likes a game of chase before he is caught. He is also quite the houdini and knows when the electric is off on the fence! He doesnt have a bad bone in his body and has never bitten, bucked or lifted a leg. My 2 year old niece jumps all over him.

He is an amazing hack and his schooling is starting to come along nicely. He also loves to jump. They are very versatile and good weight carriers. You can also get on without a mounting block :D

They have a lovely trot that is so comfortable and can turn their hoof to anything.

Mine is very cheap to keep. He's barefoot, naked and out 24/7.

I would not change him for the world. Everyone should have one!

Now some pictures because I just LOVE showing him off!

I also agree with all the pros and cons already noted. My girl is a little dressage diva and when she tries, she is an absolute star (in typical Haffie style though, she sometimes takes some convincing ;) ) but, as already mentioned, you cant make them do something they dont want to.
Here is my little princess :D

That's a good point, I had forgotten to mention the decibel level in my post. Yelling at you to look at them, yelling at you to see what clever trick they have done, but mainly yelling at you to give them attention and most of all FEED them ...it is very rewarding to be chattered at all the time!

Thanks so much all the photos are just fab :D just going to ring as she had viewings and I've had to wait my turn.

Will bear in mind point re: lami and ask for vet records disclosure or similar as I need to know how long ago the flare up was.

I used to school a little haffie x for her owner. The rider was little kid and was having a few issues. I could see why! It was a cheeky monkey with a wicked buck but also with an equally wicked jump! Could become an absolute tank when the mood took her though and was too smart for her own good. I ended up eventing her to a decent level. She was a brill little thing once she stopped throwing her weight around.

I'm going on Friday afternoon so will sort out my brave pants and forget that last time I bought a horse it was a bruitalised and troubled soul who was totally mis described and unsuitable for me:eek: PS: to those who remember him he is in training and is a totally happy and reformed character. I will post an update next month or so when we are sure he is turned the corner as he is going intro soon.

my haffy was totally unsuitable when I bought him, 4 years old never been on a hack in his life, and I was returning to horses after a 20 odd year brake and wanted a happy hacker. He's still here 5 years later but my we had a journey :D:D

Well can I join the Haffie club as the blond one Ellie is arriving tomorrow at lunchtime?? She hacked out in the heaviest of traffic (and god I mean heavy lorries, tractors, buses, motorbikes) today not a foot wrong and she trotted nicely and stopped when asked to. I'm excited and hopeful that I can get back in the saddle and out and about again at last after my bad year last year:)
