Thinking of buying a 4x4..... but totally clueless!!

Would be fab to get some advise from you clever lot!!!

Not sure how much I want to spend but probably 10k max, I don't need it to tow at the moment but it might have to in the future and will need to be capable of pulling 2 horses. I would prefer a diesel..... any help would be great??

i have akia sorento 2.5 diesel. it is great for towing and tows my ifor 510 and big lad no trouble, has a towing capacity of 2.8 tonnes so would easily do 2 horses and a big box.
they are great value for money with plenty of extras and pretty good on fuel, about 33mpg on our automatic. you should be able to get one for 10k fairly easily, we have the xs that has leather seats so easy to keep clean!
they are also quite compact so easy to take shopping etc. tax as with all the 4x4s is about £225 a year eeek!
best to avoid any of the ones that are look a like 4x4 but only really useful for golf clubs etc! e.g Rav4, honda CRV, nothing against them, in fact we had a rav before but they just aren't capable of towing safely at that weight, the ravs listed weight to tow is only 1.5 tonne which would barely do a trailer and light horse, my ifor weighs a tonne on its own! with any make you should be able to look up the mpg and towing capacity to get an idea whether it will be ok.

We've got a waggon at the mo so I don't need a trailer just yet - but if I ever do in the future I don't want a crappy 4x4 that won't tow!

You can't go wrong with a Landy, otherwise I adore my Toyota Hilux Surf. Its an absolute dream to drive, tows with ease and runs very well on vegetable oil as well as diesel!

Land rover discovery, wonderful cars and life savers (literally)! Would not buy anything else. Only get a diesel though as petrol is a little juicy and don't go for the automatic.

Mitsubishi Shogun Sport, had it 3 years from new, love it

Previous to that had Landrover Freelander, biggest pile of s#1t on the road.

OH 's crusty old County & Defender were game for anything though

I have a Kia Sorento too but haven't yet towed with it, but that's the purpose that I've bought it for... Also have XS for the wipeable leather seats
