I have a 13.1 cob mare which I thought would be bigger shes 6! I'm thinking of letting her have a foal but at the same time I want to know if I could sort of predict the foal been 14-15hh when grown. My mare lives out 24/7 with access to a stable so im wanting something easy going hardy like her, so I'm wondering about crossing her with another other breed other than a cob to get the hight? I have ready stories about foal not growing too big in the mum and heard other stories of both mother and foal dying from been stuck...... Im just scared over coving her with an other cob that is taller and him been too heavy and chunky for her, for me to get the hight ouf of a foal then her have problems

might seem confusing how I have typed it..... ??‍♀️

Unfortunately you can't guarantee anything with breeding. You can't guarantee a safe birth and you can't guarantee what foal you'll get!

My friend bred a 15.2hh cob mare to a lovely 16hh maxicob. She wanted a decent weight carrier to continue a line of mares she'd had for decades ... Mare of known parentage but the cob was very nice but unknown breeding...

Well. I still have the foal on my yard for kids to play with. Nice pony but at 13.1hh and 18 years old now I don't think she'll ever make the height. Throwbacks can always happen and you just don't know what's coming out!

Agree that breeding for height can be a minefield. I know of two full brothers, one is 15:3 the other is 17:1

Why not sell your mare and buy something bigger?

?????. No it's not a ridiculous idea. Its ridiculous that you even bothered to comment if your not going to say anything useful. Hence why I said it...for people like you???‍♀️

You should always put blood over bone if using a bigger stallion so you might not get a weight carrier or a bigger one. Breeding is great fun if you have a suitable mare and very deep pockets. In your shoes I would buy either a horse for now or if you are happy to wait 6/7 years then a weanling in the autumn or a yearling now. The old saying "fools breed horses for wise men to buy" is very true. It is far cheaper in the long run to buy the colour, size and sex you want than take the chance on getting it by haphazzard breeding

Thank you for your reply. It was just a thought as I'm not getting ride of my mare shes too good and my daughter can grow into her. Shes like our dog and a well loved member of our family. I just thought it would be nice to let her have a foal but needed to get some good advice first. X

Thank you for all your advice, my mare is so beautiful in side and out, I wont be getting rid of her but may consider buying another. The other question is do I go gelding or mare again haha ??‍♀️
