Ok, so I am thinking of taking Spooks to our local show in 2 weeks time for a bit of a change of scenery to endurance. I am considering doing the novice showjumping - it's only 2ft and may help me with my jumping nerves!!

Was also thinking of doing a couple of showing classes as this is something that I have never done (apart from a couple of best turned outs, which left face it is just walking round in circles!).

I only have a black jacket, so would have to wear that no matter what we did! (i can hear you all cringing now, but i'm not about to go any buy a new one for one show!!) but was thinking of doing a novice working hunter and possibly a veteran class (spooks is 18)

So would his rugby pelham be ok for the working hunter and vetran classes?

And also can you talk me through what you would do for your individual show - I have never done this so dont have a clue what i should be doing!!

Thanks!!

My individual show is walk A X C then go left into trot, change the rein at K X M and canter the bend at M through to H then change the rein H X F in trot and then canter the bend at F, I usually do an extended canter on the long side (K, E, H) and then back to trot at C then walk at M then halt and salute at B.

Hope that helps?

As for bits I am not sure about working hunter classes but I know in our recent veteran class we were only allowed to ride in a snaffle. The show schedule should tell you of any restrictions, so best check there

And finally, have a great time at the show

What type/breed is spooks? If he's native then a tweed is ideal for showing. However, if its local you should be able to get away with black jacket.

So long as the working hunter class isn't a novice class then the rugby pelham is fine for both classes.

Individual show, makes sure you show all paces on both reins.
From the beginning:
-Stand up for the judge, when told to start walk straight away from judge, pick up trot and go large.

-If your horse can extend do so across long side.

-Collect before corner and canter half circle, back to trot across the digaonal (again extend if you can).

-Collect before corner and canter half cirlce, then extend (gallop) long side.

-Back to trot, walk, the halt, then drop the reins and salute.

Try to begin your individual show on Spooks best rein
pm if you need any more help

i would make sure you plan out your classes! personally i would not be doing the working hunter before the ridden as i would find it hard to settle my horseback down!! hope yours is not the same!

ok - good point - perhaps arab/PBA class would be better

Spooks is welshie x arab - he is fairly laid back

Schooling isn't his forte - but he does seem to rise to the occasion in a show ring.

I just want to have a bit of a go at something to help my nerves! I totally lost my confidence a few years ago and although we are fine charging across the countryside doing endurance, the idea of walking round a showring with people looking at me is terrifying! The individual show bit is my worst nightmare!!! (kinda feel a bit sick now just thinking about it!!)

A couple of piccies of the little man in case you are interested - please note he is stood like a total numpty and that is not his normal look!!

Sadly there is no disguising the cow hocks, but hey - this isn't gonna be HOYS!!

I reckon you'll need to pait him up and try a partbred M&M class, hard to tell in pics but I think he may be a bit heavy for arab/PBA class.

My chap has cow hocks too, its not the worst conformation fault, and like you say its not HOYs! Just try to enjoy yourself!

P.S do you have a plain leather bridle?
