Thinking of hedgelaying but how much is it??

Hi

Am thinking of getting this done as I know it looks nice, good for wildlife etc. Anyone ever had this done please??? Do they charge by the metre etc ??

I saw a program on TV last night & a hedge layer was talking & it takes approximately 2 days to do around 20mtrs............ so how much a day would you work for?
 
Where abouts are you?
It does depend on your area, how old the hedge is, how grown in with weed, if there is a fence to be taken down, is it on a roadside, etc, etc, obviosly the more work that needs doing the more it costs.
so start at between eight and ten pound a metre.
 
I was lucky in that the old man who worked around here was only to willing to show me how to hedge lay. There really is not a lot to doing a previously laid hedge but a wll overgrown one is a lot of work!

blimey!! I will ring someone tomorrow its quite a safe place ie no roads just farmland etc

Probably about 150metres long. Someone suggested doing a hedgelaying course...I just dont know if i have time to do it...but I like the idea of good for wildlife etc

With two of us working at it, using a chainsaw for the heavy cutting, we two amateurs do about 10m in a short day, including clearing the brambles first and stacking up the rubbish afterwards. I've been quoted £12 per metre on my very accessible hazel hedge, but he said that it would be more on the less accessible blackthorn hedge. He aims to do 10m per day.

I would start at 8 to £10 a metre, but like i said it depends on where you are and how bad the hedge is!
Last year all of the hedges we did where old and full of bramble, rose, and weed, we also had to take out all the old fenceing. You never get a young straight forward, show hedge around here!

Our neighbour went on a stone walling course and offered her walls as the venue! def the cheapest way to both learn how to do it and get a bit done gratis at the same time, could try the same with hedges I guess!

Thanks we are happy to clear it first But I was quoted £30 per metre today!!! over the phone.
Happy to pay going rate for a days work but that is really a lot! I would be better to buy a shredder and chainsaw the lot at that rate!?! But I will ask around. I would like to have a go but not sure if I will have time to learn it etc. Was told it was quite easy..perhaps should pay someone to train me!

Bloomin eck! i think its about time we put our rates up!
It takes a bit of skill and practise to know how far to cut through, and what to lay and what to cut out, judging which direction to lay etc, etc.But like anything it is onley "easy" when you know how.
if you can find a coarse in your area then go for it, it is the most satisfying thing to look at a finished hedge and think, i did that!

We are in Beds and there is a guy called Alan Burnage from near Luton, I got his number off the National Hedge Laying website. He quoted us £10 per metre labour only, materials were on top for a 200m length of hedge with no fence or brambles to clear
