I'd like to have a foal from my mare. She is 14 so it is now or never really- though we are unsure whether she may have had a foal at 3. I don't really know what to put her to though? She is Tb/ welsh d and would ideally like more tb. She is 15hh and as possible maiden don't want to go too big so think I am looking at the 16hh mark max, also want a natural covering. Any ideas what you would put her to and whether you would breed her. Here she is

I am really not keen on coloureds so don't want a coloured stallion!

It is by no means 100%, but if a mare has had a foal her teats wont be as small, also the vet should be able to confirm if she is a maiden. Are you looking for the foal to do a specific job or be an alrounder? What is your stud fee budget?

No nec. true!! I used to think that, but we had a mare here this year that I was told was a maiden and looking at her bag I agreed - it was tiny! Then I looked her up and discovered that she was infact 17yo and was the dam of 2 Group winners!!

I have a dun mare TBxWelsh D as well

I have had two foals from her

this is her foals (not very flattering has have only taken snaps in field etc not proper tarted up pics!)

It might give you an idea of what you'll get to WB stallions similar to mine.

Her teats are absolutely huge! hence why everyone has been telling us she must have had a foal. Vet said it wasn't a good theory when she looked at her yesterday because we mentioned we wanted to breed her.
Wanted the foal to be an allrounder really- not looking to breed a superstar. As for stud fees i am at the point at just looking what your money gets you but its definately not going to be in the over £1000 bracket.
 
Horsegroupie; your quarterbred-Welshies are stunning. What led you to your choice of stallions for this mare? Also, do you know her actual Welsh / TB bloodlines? I've seen some good horses based on Welsh D's, but that older youngster really is something else! (I've also seen some not so great ones, so I'd be interested to know the secret).
 
Yes I do, she is by Catch the Thatch out of a Derwen Regal Commander mare, she has competed BE and has been placed 2*, as well as BSJA and BD, she is graded into the Head Studbook SHB(GB).

My choice of stallions well ummm.........they are my own, I think that what was first on the list, seriously tho, I used Romeo first has he was my no.1 stallion at the time (a real horse of a lifetime was he!!), then when she had the first foal at foot we didn't put her back in foal because she was completely hand reared herself and we wanted to make sure she coped with the whole having a foal scenario, which she was a trooper though quite clingy and wouldn't let the foal out of her sight right upto weaning. We thne decided on teddy because of his stamp, build and conformation would be very complimentary to hers and his pedigee is excellent and although not proven he is a talented youngster with lots of potential, we thought it would be a great cross and the foal is really stunning, the pics really don;t do him justice! I was so pleased with the foal that she is back infoal to teds for next year, despite the fact I have a service voucher for her to use any SHB(GB) graded stallion!

Do you think the TB element was important in what you produced, or would Welsh D x Warmblood be as successful?

I think the Welsh D is an under-rated bred in a lot of ways, but there's a definate knack in breeding up from it, and I've seen some Welsh-TB crosses that seem to have a loaded shoulder, more than either of the parent breeds; does this just come right in the next generation or are there better crosses for Welsh Ds - assuming you want to crossbreed- than TBs?

Of course, I've got an ulterior motive for asking (or I may have next spring) in the form of a Welsh D filly.

Would like to see more shots of your boys.
 
I have seen some very nice Welsh x WB but I haven't done it myself, I do have a Welsh D mare as well but I cross her to my pony stallions, she has had two foals by Ousbek pure bred Arab and is now infoal to Georgeo who is Arab/Pinto/WB. I do like the Welsh as a breed, I use to have a Welsh D when i was younger and he was a little star!
I have considered putting WB stallions over my Welsh mare and my Connie mare but haven't done it, I think my Welsh would cross really well to Romeo and the Connie to Helios but not done so. Maybe I will next year who knows.
I never really thought about the TB being influential in my cross with the dun mare but I am proud of her Welsh roots, I think Welsh sometimes the Welsh get looked over for what they can add to a breeding program.
