Tommy out on loan for 6 mths or whatever length of time it takes to sort ourselves out .

For those of you that have drawn up a loan agreement, What where your requirements, do's and dont's . I've never put a pony/horse out on loan before so any advice would be much appreciated . Its breaking my heart for me to do this , but something has to give . A friend of mine has agreed to let tiarnan ride their pony whenever he likes . I've explained that tommy might be going on holiday but we can visit whenever he likes .

Any advice would be greatfully recieved .
 
Oh no im sorry to hear that, must be such a hard decision. My friend recently got a horse on loan if you go onto the BHS website they have one drawn up with you just needing to input names etc and they give you hints what else to put in.
 
When I had my horse on loan the owner added in a couple of extras she wanted to the standard BHS loan agreement stipulating what I could do with the horse (no hunting). She also added a bizarre bit about me returning the body if she died. It wasn't so much that she'd put it in there, but that it was the first thing she mentioned when we went through the agreement.
Luckily I returned the horse in 1 piece!
 
Well I can kinda understand her bizarreness lol .

Ive placed an ad in new rider so if anyone would care to have a look at it and tell me what they think .

Thanks hulla , I think thats already mentioned in the bhs sample with regards to what you can and can't do with the horse/pony . I know I will be keeping a strict eye on him . God I sound almost scary lol ! Il worry about him I know that until I get to know the people who do take him and if he even gets taken lol .

Any reasonable loaner will understand, although there is a fine line between keeping an eye on them and interfering. I guess that's something you'll work out with them as you go along.
I've had 3 loan horses in the past and found 2 of them through my instructor who was able to vouch for me, the third belonged to a friend. I'm sure you've already thought of this, but do put the feelers out with your farrier, tack shop etc as you may feel happier if you can find someone with a "reference" of sorts.
Just to say too, that although there are a lot of horror stories, there are some good loaners out there. My loan horses were treated as my own and kept to the same standard as I keep my boy now.

I will more than likely have to get references from their associates ie vet, farrier, riding school and just really suss them out before I can come to an agreement , Although Im pretty good at sussing out a character at first hand . I know I seem like Im really fretting over this , well to certain degree I am but I think once I meet people and get to know them I will relax more . I just want what is best for tommy and ourselves at the minute .

I hope I do get these type of people that you have fallen in with x
 
Well, it is a scary thing to do, handing over your ponies care to someone else. I'd be a loaner's worst nightmare if it was me, despite having been on the other side of the fence. As you say, once you find the right people you will be fine.

I thought your advert read very well - I'd be tempted myself if I wasn't a bit big for him
