thinking of selling my horse after what happened last week.

I would wait for the back check, and perhaps let your instructor ride him for a bit - perhaps let thm school him for a bit. Private lessons are a good move.

If you do decide to sell don't beat yourself up. This is your hobby - and an expensive one too, so it should be fun and you should feel safe. So many people stick with an unsuitable horse that they can't manage, when they could be having much more fun with something else. Its not a failure if you sell him...xx

in that case get a different instructor , the last thing you need is for someone to push you ,something happing then you go even more back , you need someone who is going to be supportive and help you overcome your fears ,and make you and your horse a team again

Second this.

I had a set back with my horse of nearly 6 years about a year ago - his signature dish has always been to spook at something and use it as an excuse to tank off but normally he stopped after half the arena but Jan 2010 about a month after I moved him to a new yard he went hell for leather including leaping in the air - I didn't fall off but I totally lost trust in him.

Even though I had done unaff dressage up to Elementary, small hunter trials, sponsored rides. riding club teams etc. I went through quite a long period where I would rather go for a gallop across the Downs than ask him to canter in the school at home where he was the most distracted mostly by what his mates were doing especillay hs girlfriend :D

My old instructor was similar to yours. I have now found one that has gone back to basics and is working on my position because I had reverted to a defensive riding position, tipping forward and not riding him forward enough which had made matters worse. He is also the most positive instructor I have ever had and I come away feeling really bouyed up. I think I have finally cracked it again and we are off for our first comp in a couple of weeks for nearly a year - also moved yards again 3 months ago has really helped he just never settled at the former yard.

Sometimes it is best to move on - you are supposed to enjoy it afterall but if you were enjoying it you probably can again - good luck.
