My short haired lurcher is caged at night, and wears a coat. His cage is covered, he has a memory foam bed with a wool blanket on it. He’s happy in his cage and in a coat.

He currently wears a Weatherbeeta rug which has a padded inner and fleece inner and soft outer. He’s always warm in it (never too warm). A couple of days ago I suddenly thought that we used to put horses in these fleece types and they were rubbish really, dragged the coat rather than floating over it. Because the outer is a soft material it will also adhere to the woollen blanket. Bit like us wearing pyjamas in bed if we’re normally naked I suppose, everything drags a bit!

Would he possibly be more comfortable in a more outdoor type coat, with a nylon lining and outer which are more slidey. Does that make sense? Can I have some opinions please? Obviously as a lurcher I have a vast amount to try, including the outdoor version of his current nightwear (in photo).

I have a fleece coat and they all hate it, and yes it pulls the coat (or the coat pulls it, whatever). I think a slidey inside would be nicer.

But being a whippety thing surely he tells you if he’s not comfy?

Mine would let me know in no uncertain terms 😂 Mine sleep in the bed under the duvet so they don't have coats for anything other than walks. But fleece onsies seem to be the thing for over night. The outdoor coats are a mix of fleece and waterproof either fleece lined or the odd nylon lined. They prefer the all fleece ones, then the fleece lined ones and the nylon ones last.

The JRT wears fleece coats and is happy in them they are like a little vest type things.

When mavis was speyed they put her in a vest to protect the stitches that is a lovely stretchy type material a bit like what leggings are made of and she had that on all the time until the stitches dissolved, I can image that would be nice to sleep in its like a baby grow fro dogs.

Oooh I misunderstood the assignment. I only have my old staffy as experience, she had two coats one a pink slick lined fleece and one a navy fleece lined waterproof. Without fail the pink one would be on in the morning but the navy one would not.

My dog is very old now, and my house not the warmest.

He doesn't like you putting on any kind of coat that involves his legs.

He's happy wearing his dog robe, so today I bought a sherpa fleece pet blanket that has a suedey type material in the other side and turned in into a coat using the dogrobe pattern.

He's worn it all evening very happily.

Mine love their fleece pj's (I even got tank top versions for my boy who pees on his legs 🤣) but Fizz especially doesn't seem to like a smoother inside fabric. I've not tried it with inside coats but I got her a coat for the rain with had a satin lining and she refused to move and just glared at me 🤣

I really like the thermatex dog coats for indoors, my spoilt papillon has one for after her hydro sessions to help her dry off, they are very warm and cosy.
I agree, they are lovely and comfortable for them. They do a greyhound/lurcher one too, or at least they used to.
ETA. I just checked, they still do, and you can choose your custom colour/binding/style and order via the website

Thanks, yes we have thermatex types for the gun dogs and they dry them well but always pull tight over the chest, again they seem to drag the coat. I will drag out a nylon lined warm waterproof for bedtime tonight.
