Thinline muzzles - how long do they last?

Just wondering how others have got on with them. I bought a muzzle and headcollar in Oct last year, used it for a few weeks and really rated it. I started using it again in March/April during the day (prob 8-6ish) and it's already got a tear in the edge of the hole. He's on grass and I can't see that he's caught it on anyhing so assume it's just wear and tear.

I can't afford to keep replacing it so was just wondering if I've been unlucky or if they just don't last? I did try him with a Shires deluxe comfort muzzle, but it gave him sores so thought I had found a solution!

Thank you!

I’ve got two that are YEARS old, 3 or 4 maybe more. Physio bought one and it ripped very quickly, I think she complained about it. I wonder if they’ve changed the recipe recently.

Thanks that's interesting. I didn't think he was rough with it as he doesn't mind wearing it and the ground isn't stony etc.

I contacted them about it and they said that if it's under 90 days old then they'd give a discount on a replacement, but mine is older than that. If it wasn't so expensive then I might not mind so much!

A livery at my yard had a free replacemet last month when one of the wings ripped. I do wonder if they are not so durable now?

Mine is 2 years old and has a small tear on one of the wings that I am going to try to repair.

Original ones are much better. The last few are rubbish and rip fairly easily. They say they've not changed anything but I'm doubtful on that.

Poop. Seems like it's not worth getting another one if others are having issues too. So annoying as it great when it's not torn!!

Yes I had to replace one from last year that got completely ripped in half very strange.

Have one that's two years old, one that's a year old. No notable signs of wear and tear so far (aside from the awful discolouration...).

Mine tore working a year. Got a replacement no problem. Not used it yet though as am allowed to restrict grazing at last!

Why do they do that? Even had one I never used and it discoloured in the tack room!

Mine has lasted ages. I have had a breakage once years ago but it’s still useable and kept as a spare.
Sad to hear they are no longer as good as I couldn’t be without mine so would have no choice but to buy new.

Take a look at the Tough 1 Easy Breathe on a headcollar. I had to put a thin cable tie through the velcro fastener, and pad under the chin with a strip of neoprene, but got three and a half summers out of it.
Thanks for the recommendation- i think the shape of it means it would rub his chin unfortunately.
I've managed to make the tear part of the hole on the thinline, so have bought myself a bit more time 🤞

I did that too, then when it went further my husband riveted an aluminium circular plate to the bottom and it was going strong when I stopped using it after another 6 months.

Has anyone tried these, modelled by a forum horse and originally designed for him.

Ah I was just about to dig this out! I initially felt that it was a bit cheaty, making something so similar - but if the quality of the Thinline ones really has dropped all that much, then I'm glad there's an alternative. They look a bit less flexible and a bit more hardwearing.

They were made after I complained about all of my muzzles for Rigs. One was rubbing, one seemed hot, one was flexible but tore easily and also it was so, er, flexible, that when he lifted his head up, it dropped over his nostrils!!!

He made it out of rigid plastic, it springs away from the face. Rigs is tough on his muzzles and still has the first one, only the odd scratch. He has stopped needing asthma meds as it is so, er, breezy 🤣

He can be out for hours, 16 a day, and is keen to come in as he is still hungry. Yes, he manoeuvres it to eat out of the side, but the sides have an actual smaller gap now than the middle, so still it works.

He frequently breaks a zip tie, sometimes 2 (absolutely on purpose, he inserts it under a fence rail and jerks it upwards). But, it still holds in place. I also like the fact that I know the zip ties break at 8kg (or at least a reasonable breaking strain), as advertised.

As he does a lot of manoeuvring, his halter side square ring sometimes rubs. I have added sheepskin to hold that off his face.

I hate muzzles and wish he didn't have to have one. This one is the best for him that I have tried.

I don't suppose you have any photos you could share please?

Mine seems fine but I’ve only had it a year and he only wears it when he gets a new section of grass for a few days. Either way the field being full electric there isn’t anything for him to catch it on thankfully 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I love my Thinline muzzle. My pony hates anything near his nose so I never thought he'd accept a muzzle. He's very happy to wear this and will move his head so it can be put on. To me it's yet another consumable that I buy to keep him healthy and happy - he can be out with his friends for longer with this on.

Sorry I don't and I don't have the muzzle any more either. He cut a 100mm circle out of a piece of aluminium, cut a circle out of the middle, and used 4 pop rivets, smooth side inwards, to attach it directly over the Thinline hole on the outside. It bent itself into a shallow cup shape because aluminium is soft, and worked perfectly.
