Hi

I use Boots own safety razor to shorten my mare's mane (takes a bit of practise so only take small amounts off at a time!) and then run it from root to tip underneath the mane to thin it. It usually takes me 20 mins to do it that way and no rearing or sillyness from an uncomfortable horse! For a TB she has an incredibly thick mane and tail.

Thinning scissors are really only meant to be used on the ends of hair to take weight out (although I use them further up on my own hair to get rid of bulk). I tried doing my mare's mane with them once but you get too much 'spikeyness' especially if you want to plait.
Oh and I'm an ex hairdresser.

I knew there'd be a hairdresser out there who would know about thinning scissors , what they do & how to use them.
