-Or at least trying to!

I would like a gadget that helps me.. Solo combs are a no no as its just too thick.
Any others?

Regards,

Owner of thick maned pony.

Thanks both- i have come across the rake and the sissors but never actually used them..

Do they work, do we know? (as in, properly work)

Rake it but do it from the underneith, you can pick them up quite cheap now, and they come with different heads but also try to pull it as well on a warm day after exercise, solo combs are no good on thick manes, you might as well use a pair of scissors or a pulling comb, either way your just shortening a thick mane.

ditto this - rakes are fab but use them from the underneith - i used mine from the top first time and ended up with a layered look :o

I did do it from underneath - well to a fashion - i brushed his mane over to the wrong side then raked the top - if that makes sense! Still didn't like it - now after pulling i have a lovely mane again...well my horse does! :)

aah see i ahve a horse who'd try to kill me if i tried to pull her mane or tail :o so i have to make do = but yeah - best option is pulling - if you can't to that then rake ;) saying that - i do her tail with scissors and have often had comments on how nice it is - then i say its scissored and peeps go all haughty on me

another one who had a disaster with the rake!! I did it from underneath too but it still went wrong and the shorter bits underneath made the whole mane stand up lol. Best results I had were with scissors, but nobody believed me, everyone thought it was pulled!

Ah, yes. The horse with the bushy mane.

If he's got a decent neck and isn't a breed which needs his mane for showing, is hogging an option?

My old shire x was the hairiest horse in the world (well it seemed to me like he was) and I used to hog his mane. He had a decent neck and the hogging made him look incredibly smart, and that was a lot easier that trying to thin it. I kept my boys forlock, so he had a bit of fly protection.
