Such a pity. And this happened in the First World rather than the Third World...

Don't know who was in the wrong there??? And what type of pasture was that - considering they were meant to be malnourished? I know it was winter, but hello... it's the US. I am sure there was enough grass somewhere! They also don't look that malnourished on the grizzly picture to me...

That's horrendous :( If you can't afford to keep foals and mares theres organisations that will help!
He should have never allowed the situation to escalate to this extent if he couldn't cope with it

The dead foals look well covered, possibly the mares had given their all to the foals, and were malnourished. I think that under the circumstances, they had no choice but to cull the foals. They should never have been in foal in the first place though!

I agree it was a difficult decision but probably the most humane in the circumstances they found themselves in - more planning needed in the future to hopefully prevent a repeat

Its very sad, i agree, and the stress for the mares is awful.

But it makes you think about all the poor diary cows that have their calves removed 24hrs after giving birth. Bullocks often shot, the rest raised in tiny calving pens.

I think we ought to be more aware of what actually goes on right around us too.

Rubbish!! They could have FED the mares. The reason they were poor is that they weren't getting enough from winter grass to support themselves and their foals. Extra feed would have got the mares looking better in weeks!!

No not nice at all but then why is this so shocking yet we don't have a problem with it happening to dairy cows' calves all the time here? Surely that's just as horrendous and that is intentional?!
