I'd always wanted my own horse but after a year of reading the problems associated with horse ownership I am now at the point of abandoning any intention to EVER buy my own.
To start with there is the dodgy dealer issue. Buy the perfect horse and get it home to find it's legs are dropping off.
Horses inclinations to self harming behaviour plus a myriad of ailments which can kill them.
Dealing with livery issues.
Getting a saddle to fit.
Hooves..bare or shod.
What to feed it.
How to ride it!
And on and on and on .........

I hope you lot are very pleased with yourselves as you sit there feeling smug about your multitude of horsey issues. :p:D

Hey! You forget the plus side! Least you will now have money and not sittin ah home, shivering eating Tesco value beans whilst your horse lounges about in 4 rugs under heat lamps ;)

obviously doesn't read the threads where we say what a lovely hack we,
the kisses and love that our horses give us,
the endless laughs and giggles that they give us,
the friends that we make along the way,
the smell of a newly cleaned saddle,
the buzz of putting on a new rug,
the exhilaration of that first gallop over a much loved bridleway,
the sense of achievement when the judge hands you your rosette,
standing looking at your very own horse peacefully grazing in the field,

personally speaking give me my horse over any person any day of the week. :D:D:p

well, if you were intent on learning about horse ownership only from an internet forum, you probably are not ready to have your own horse yet. Go and get some lessons, do a BHS horse ownership course and then think about it rationally. Oh and don't believe everything you read on here, I think a lot of the stories are enhanced to make them more exciting to read, and to encourage a response and discussion (even an argument!!).

Aww, I often tell my OH about things I am reading (rather sad I am) and he's like 'do you think you need to put the phone down and not read the forums for a bit' as I admit I have sometimes got upset when reading about horses dying and got paranoid something will happen etc... Such a sensitive flower! Vanner is right, must take notice of the good times!

If you're read all the 'negative' stuff and you still want a horse, then that's probably a good indicator.
The forum does read like a catalogue of horror stories at times, but that's what tends to happen with forums. And although some people do post the 'I love my horse' type threads, these threads are probably in the minority.
However, I think that the reality is that most people would describe horse ownership as hard work, life-dominating and fantastic. You probably don't get the most 'balanced' view by reading a forum, but it's a good insight in to the issues that can affect horse owners.

At the age of 43, having wanted a pony since I was 11, nothing was going to put me off. Nine years later we have three horses and all the family ride. Best thing I ever did - but it was the steepest learning curve of my entire life!

Horse ownership will test your resilience, "red rosette at the gymkhana" stuff every day it certainly is not! But if its in you to really want your own horse, once you know what the reality is, you'll just deal with all the problems and the good stuff makes up for them. :)

Job done then :D

:D thank you. My husband will be delighted but it means he can't have the black lab he wants as part of the bargain if I get one.. Hey wait.. I can add that to the list of +ives. :D
Makes note.. Won't have to get black lab dog :D

They could have told me I would be struck by lightening if I acquired my own horse all those years ago and I would still have gone ahead. If you have been put off by posts on here then I would say you are not ready or not determined enough to make it work.
Horse ownership can be about challenges but most of us wouldn't have it any other way, it isn't like owning a car, stuff happens that you have no control over. The test is to sort them when they do, and the feeling of satisfaction that comes with that.

You know I've mostly had very few issues, in regards to some. I had two years of hell ownership with my last mare. She was just accident prone and anything that could go wrong went wrong.

My gelding on the other hand has been a breeze over the many years I have had him other than the odd injury and the pony other than the issues of keeping her in the field (sorted now) has been easy.

It depends on the horse IMO I keep to myself, don't do yards and even if I had to wouldn't be engaging in the whole yard social scene and that's what I think has given me the lack of problems I read about on here.

$h!t£ happens in life is the way I look at it, deal and move on so don't let others drama put you off getting a horse OP :) and as someone else said if you read this place and still want a horse you will be fine, I mean what livery yard politics could be worse than this place :D :D

lol you need a sense of humour to own horses, some of the responses to your obvious tongue in cheek post makes me realise that some folk must leave theirs at the yard every morning ;)

Dot worry, people tend to turn to here when they feel strongly about stuff ie when stuff goes wrong. The majority of happy horse owners probably have a smooth ride an therefore a bit less to say?

Lol.. Just added sense of humour failure to list along with lightening strikes, someone did mention lightening didn't they:confused: :D

There is a marvellous invention called an OFF button ;)

In defense of HHO any forum is the same, think of the birth control qualities of Mumsnet!

Horse keeping is as hard or as easy as you choose to make it.

Lucky you wish I had seen this forum before I got a horse.:D Got five now although three are miniatures so they only really make one whole one so you could say I have got three.:D Just think of all the money you can spend on yourself instead of on a horse and you will never have to endure the matchy matchy phase.;)

Just make sure you don't ask about having children before you have them! Put you right off it would...

Lol at the sense of humor failures :D

You forgot to mention hay splinters, random cuts appearing and the ******s spooking and jumping on your foot etc etc :D:D:D

Plus sudden, coming out of the blue, near death, with months and months of treatment for an allergy to an every day ingredient!!

What a load of crap

Far more importantly, this forum has almost bankrupted me with my desire to buy Matchy Matchy sets and also makes me eat Pringles. Your problems op are nothing compared to mine!!!
