A good home! After what they've been put you through?

I must be the luckiest horse owner in Europe!!

Bought my first horse from a yard where no one was allowed to ride him in the winter, as he dumped them. I an absolute US rider. He is now 34 years old and never given me a vet bill.

I also purchased a VERY OLD Dales type as a companion who lived to be 27 years of age and was a star.

We purchased two Shagya mares from the Hungarian National Stud. I was not happy with the vet certs. and had them revetted. My French vet thought one had a problem, we had her x-rayed, she had had juvenile arthritis in one hind foot and so could not be ridden or driven. She was one of the most expensive three year olds of her year - we did a deal with the stud. I bought her for a song, her first foal was approved for the Shagya stud book...thirteen stallions forward only 3 approved. So she was a bargain. We now have a three year old filly from her and intend to cross her with our CB.

When we first purchased a CB, we wanted horses of either sex by Borderfame Prince Charming or Mulgrave Royal. It just so happened that a mare and a filly were for sale by each of these stallions, so we bought them both...as you do. Never a second of regret.

I have lovely healthy horses on my yard.

MY advice? Buy from a reputable breeder.

Lol :p

Don't go on the chicken or sheep forums whatever you do! Chickens and sheep only exist to find new and interesting ways to get sick or injured.

What about the s*** day you've had, kids driving you mad, house is a tip, things getting you down. Off to the horse when husband comes home, lovely hack out, good long canter and by the time you return home all is forgotten and the world is great again :)))

Op you have got it absolutely right, horse ownership does involve all those things, if you want to become a horse owner you have to be tough enough to deal with all that, and if the realisation of what it all involves is putting you off, then horse ownership is definatly not for you. Horse owners are a special breed of determined individuals, who can pick themselves up, plough on, and keep learning no matter what is thrown at them and ultimately will tell you that it is actually worth all the effort and heartache.

Consider yourself having had a lucky escape. No need to thank us.

I agree with the above and other warnings too. Its the naivety of some potential owners who see cuddly fluffy things and dont realise perhaps whats involved. Us equine owners wholeheartedly welcome as many horse owners, loaners, riding school folk to join us in the pleasure we get from having these 4 legged friends. BUT do your homework know the downside too. One thing that is always being advised is get advice from someone experienced in all aspects of horse care and get involved with the practical side, understand it. And thats why you get lots of opinions and advice on here. Plus we get mad when we see neglect etc when things have gone wrong and humans cannot or dont want to cope with their equine problems and turn their backs on them. Good luck I hope you take the plunge.

Well that's torn it! I'm looking at a property with stables and some land and was wondering what to use the stables for if I didn't get a horse. Now you tell me that sheep and chickens also self harm and suffer from sudden unassisted death syndrome. Back to the drawing board:(
:p

Don't know if anyone's already said this but you most certainly have not missed much by not having a horse for the past 6mths or so....what with this NEVER-ENDING BL**DY WINTER that we've had!!! (Sorry, can you tell I'm just a bit fed up of wind, rain, snow and ice...?!;))
Good luck with any house/stables/land/horse purchase:)

I had had horses for nearly 30 years when I saw a fluffy little four month old miniature, I knew the pitfalls and still bought her. Then went on to buy another two of the little devils, love them even with all their naughtiness!! So unfortunately even when we know the problems we still fall into the trap of loving a little fluffy thing.:D

Thank you and sorry you are feeling so low. Ive Not quite escaped it I'm afraid. :( I horse share and the yard is on a water meadow which has been underwater regularly since last July. It's been totally miserable with the rain and snow we've had and all the bridle paths are a mess too. We have to believe it'll get better soon as it's getting to everyone.

obviously doesn't read the threads where we say what a lovely hack we,
the kisses and love that our horses give us,
the endless laughs and giggles that they give us,
the friends that we make along the way,
the smell of a newly cleaned saddle,
the buzz of putting on a new rug,
the exhilaration of that first gallop over a much loved bridleway,
the sense of achievement when the judge hands you your rosette,
standing looking at your very own horse peacefully grazing in the field,

personally speaking give me my horse over any person any day of the week. :D:D:p

I haven't see any threads of that nature on here! Do people post them in a separate part of the forum? ;)

I also took the post as somewhat tongue in cheek!

Can you add ...that horrible feeling of being a bit cold all the time....and instead of pretty flattering clothes you find yourselves looking at warm jackets etc with all the longing you used to have for a flashy pair of high heels..(or is that just em?!)

I'd always wanted my own horse but after a year of reading the problems associated with horse ownership I am now at the point of abandoning any intention to EVER buy my own.
To start with there is the dodgy dealer issue. Buy the perfect horse and get it home to find it's legs are dropping off.
Horses inclinations to self harming behaviour plus a myriad of ailments which can kill them.
Dealing with livery issues.
Getting a saddle to fit.
Hooves..bare or shod.
What to feed it.
How to ride it!
And on and on and on .........

I hope you lot are very pleased with yourselves as you sit there feeling smug about your multitude of horsey issues. :p:D

This springs to mind >

The thread is clearly a joke!

My advise is buy one of those children's rocking horses, take it outside and roll it (and yourself) in the mud, bring it inside and sit on it whilst burning £20 notes. That's pretty much the same as the real thing.

Sorry OP but if you've got the gene you've got the gene and no amount of bad news on a forum will stop you longing for a horse of your own :)

Check your ring finger. If it's longer than your first finger, you're sunk, I'm afraid :D
