So my little darling (I say this through gritted teeth as I am fantasising about what a great glue stick he would make at the moment) has so far this year trashed 4 rugs and rendered 2 unusable until mended and I am not counting the 1 he trashed and 3 he rendered unusable between November and December 31st 2010!

Last week my YO showed me the CCTV footage of him out in the paddock instructing his 18month old field pal (he is 6 he should be setting an example!) on the finer points of how to pull on a rug , he actually had his rug in his mouth pulling at it and was nudging baby Ed as if to say “like this mate” eventually baby Ed caught on and assisted himself in ripping the front straps off. He then graduated to pulling on the belly straps until they gave up the ghost at which point my Darling (for that read Pritt Stick!) proceeded to roll so the rug came off at which point they then played tug of war until it finally gave up the ghost. My YO was laughing so hard he almost wet himself, I was simply wondering where the gun was.

On Wednesday when I took off a totally trashed Bucas Smartex (Only purchased in December for a cool 150 euros), on this day he was out on his own so I have no idea at all what happened, Ninja Pigeons maybe? I decided that ok mate enough and have been leaving him naked come rain or shine and putting a fleece on him at night to dry him out and keep him snug as the temps here have been dipping down to the minus levels over the last few evenings.

Today I got to the yard find he had ripped a sodding great hole in the fleece last night.

So I give in, I give up, I throw in the towel, he can flaming well freeze to death . From now on he can be naked 24/7 if goes down to -7 he will have to become a Yak.

My revenge will be sweet in 2012 we move to the Scottish Highlands….I am thinking turned out 24/7, field shelter and if he wants a rug he will have to learn to beg.

HAHAHAHA :D Im so sorry but this just made me heave laughing....maybe I should get out more??
Some horses just really really dont like being rugged...or maybe he loves the ripping noise?? Save yourself a fortune and let him be a yak!!

Ooo, where? :p

Anyways, what a wee monkey! my old horse did something similar, although I don't quite know how. Got to the yard one day to find a naked horse, a ripped off neck (which was attached!) floating in a puddle, and the rest of his rug still all tied lying in a heap on the feild.

Horses, who would have them?

Norty boy! We have one that drags the others round by the rug....

Indeed....Baby Ed's owner is not happy and was muttering about bad examples

He is now being a total pain in the butt having learnt this new skill and is happily playing tug of war with any other horse he is turned out with! We are thinking about putting him out with the mares to break the habit

I remember purposly scuffing the toes of my new school shoes along the ground as a kid to make them look worn in - an equine equivalent perhaps?

We are house hunting at the moment looking for a smallholding on the West Coast so I have unlimited outside riding and can fulfill my desire to get a Highland Mare companion and OH can have access to a Sea Loch and fulfill his fishing desires. We have a flat in Edinburgh at the mo so ideal will be to be situated between the two and we can hopefully find someone who would like free accommodation and livery and look after the Neds and Hounds when we have to go to Edinburgh for work. Well thats the plan anyhow:-)

God yeah my mare would soon sort him out LOL! She doesn't take too kindly to being dragged around and has been known to send a few hooves flying x

omg that make me giggle lol Wonder how he gets on with the nakedness lol :D

Well judging by the amount of wallowing that was going on in the field today he is very much in touch with his "inner Hippo" add to that the amount of flattened pooh's that were in the stable and I think he is as happy as a pig in S**t lol

How happy he will be if the mercury dips down to -15 (like it did last year!) remains to be seen. We will have to see who breaks first:-)

I have a Bucas smartex and it's a really, really tough rug. I agree, he's sealed his own fate. No more rugs. ;)

What a coincidence! There is a possibility of us moving to Scotland (3 horses, 2 dogs and the rest!) in the coming couple of years. However we will be looking around the Aberdeen area for a decent size house with enough stables and land for 3 (or more!) horses!

As to the rugs.. Can you not use an old tattered rug and smear it completely with something that he finds tastes disgusting? May be a step in the right direction to cure him of his rug addiction!:D:D

My pony is currently sporting a rug with 10 patches... I have also in the past arrived at the yard to find him naked with his lightweight turnout perfectly torn from wither to tail lying on the ground by the gate...like it just tore down the back and peeled off him lengthwise! The only thing holding it together as one garment was the belly straps, front buckles and leg straps :D

Is he the incredible hulk, and just expands in size ripping it perfectly? Have you ever seen him go green when angry? lol.
