Nottinghamshire Police.

APPEAL: A brave member of the public rescued a dog that was tied to a heavy rock and was drowning in the River Trent this morning.
The Belgian Shepherd, whose registered microchip name is Bella, was spotted in the water and dragged to safety by a woman near Long Lane, Farndon, at around 8.45am today (Monday 6 January).
She had a carrier bag containing a large rock tied to her lead when she was found.
She has been taken by Nottinghamshire Police to a local vet where she is receiving care.
Officers investigating the incident are appealing for anyone who recognises this dog or saw anything suspicious in the area at the time to come forward as soon as possible.
PC Pace, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This was an evil and nasty thing to do to this poor dog and we are making every effort to find out who is responsible. We are lucky that the kind member of the public found and rescued her.
"If anyone has dash-cam or CCTV footage of vehicles in Long Lane that may show who was in the area at the time that would be really helpful.
"We are working with the RSPCA and are conducting microchip enquiries. Her name was recorded in 2010 as Bella on her microchip but it is possible she may be known by another name if her owner has changed since then. If anyone recognises her and knows who owns her please get in touch on 101, quoting incident number 103 of 6 January 2020."

It's disgusting, I've just seen the appeal and photos, they aren't exaggerating when they said heavy rock. Who in their right minds would even think of doing something so horrible?! Thank goodness she was spotted and saved, poor, poor love.

Breaks my heart the cruelty that goes on. Thank goodness that kind lady rescued the poor dog. It really doesn’t bear thinking about the stuff that goes on that we don’t know about.

UPDATE: Woman arrested after dog found drowning in River Trent

A 31-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty offences after a dog was found drowning in the River Trent this morning.

ETA. Thanks for updating SK. I had not seen you post when I posted mine.

Further info:

The Belgian Shepherd, whose registered microchip name is Bella, was spotted in the water and dragged to safety by a woman near Long Lane, Farndon, at around 8.45am today (Monday 6 January). She had a carrier bag containing a large rock tied to her lead when she was found.
The dog is now recovering at a local vet and has been eating.
PC Adam Pace, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Whilst we have made an arrest we are still appealing for information about the circumstances of the incident, including how many people were involved.
"We are lucky that the kind member of the public found and rescued her. Whilst the dog is still quite poorly she has been showing some encouraging signs by eating so hopefully she will be on the mend.
"If you saw anything, or have CCTV or dash-cam footage in the area, please get in touch on 101, quoting incident number 103 of 6 January 2020."
* Please be aware this is now an active police investigation and people must be careful what they post online as anything that reveals details of the investigation or those involved could be in contempt of court and it could be harmful to the investigation.

Poor little soul, that has brought a tear to my eyes. If the arrested woman is responsible, I hope they throw the book at her. Let's hope the dog pulls through unharmed and finds a safe forever home.

i read this story this morning and it made me cry... poor dog. I hope that as she's microchipped, her original owner can be traced as i'd better she's stolen.....

I would like to tie a large rock to the woman in question and throw her in the river....

Good god, that is simply horrific! I so hope darling Bella pulls through and finds a loving forever home. Bless the lovely woman that found and saved her.
I dare not post what I think about the scum that did this to her and what they deserve. This planet is sadly populated by some truly horrible excuses for human beings! Makes my blood boil!
Keep fighting dear Bella as there is someone out there that will love and cherish you like you deserve.
Off to get more tissues as this has really upset me ?

I honestly don’t know what is wrong with humanity, this story has really affected me, that poor lovely dog, imagine how frightened she must have been.
I’m fairly local to where this happened and the river Trent there is huge, only a couple of miles further up stream it becomes tidal. The woman who rescued her is nothing short of heroic - it’s such an utterly grim story but I am comforted that some kind hearted stranger came and saved the day. I hope the dog finds the most wonderful home off the back of this.

Many years ago the RSPCA brought in two dogs (GSDs) to kennels who’s owner tried to kill them by dousing them in petrol and setting fire to them. When I’m rocking in my chair, in my old age, I will still remember these two dogs. The term ‘shut down’ didn’t do them justice.

Then of course there was Fern the cocker spaniel, who was thrown in an industrial wheely bin and left to be crushed with the rubbish.

Anyway, the point to my ramble is all these dogs had suffered terrible neglect and abuse but fate intervened. The GSDs were spotted by a neighbour and saved and Fern’s cries were heard by two builders and she was pulled from the bin.

Hopefully this dog will fully recover and go on to live a beautiful life, without fear.

A second person has been arrested. Its awful. I'm further south than this, but near the Trent and its a huge, deep river which has claimed many lives.

Normal people unable to care for an animal for whatever reason sell it or go to the animal charities to help rehome them.

When people do what these perpetrators did - it reflects more on their deranged, cruel minds and their inability to care for any vulnerable living being.

Animal abuse cases should therefore be taken more seriously with lifetime ban on keeping any vulnerable being in their care.
Is this woman arrested a mother?

Animal abuse laws are too lenient....if they were very strict it would force people to behave. Unfortunate that for some people such laws are needed.

Campaigns for stricter animal abuse laws and punishment need to flood parliament. Flood those political suits with these realities of everyday life, like a never ending tsunami.

In some countries if you steal your hands are chopped off. It works! There’s no theft! Seems barbaric i know, but for those few criminals who want to destroy safety in community, they need some serious laws to match their seriously deranged psychopathy.

Im so relieved bella was rescued and is recovering. She deserves such a good life to get over this experience.

I wonder why they didn't simply tie her up somewhere, or just dump her in a remote spot. They went to great lengths really to dispose of her. Was this to get their kicks or were they hiding something?

This story has really upset me. In fact, every time I think about it I feel tears stinging my eyes. What is actually wrong with people?? Why on earth would someone want to do that to another living being??
I feel sick thinking about it.
Me too. I’m raging as well.
