This is so sad

I always think people are quick to jump the gun in cases like this, horses are so adept at hurting themselves in the most bizarre manner. I would t be 100% certain that this isn't a case of self harm on the horses part.

This was my first thought also. It is a much more likely scenario that it is some sort of accident.

Same here, there isn’t always a logical explanation for an injury but it doesn’t follow that if you don’t know it must be inflicted by an unknown person.

That would be my thought too. It could have been caused by a protruding nail, barbed wire fencing, even a sharp stick or stone. That all seems rather more likely than someone randomly attacking the horse with a knife. Not saying that this couldn't be what has happened of course, but it seems there is no real evidence for it.

Either way, they are horrific wounds and i really feel for the owner finding their horse in that state and the horse to have sustained those injuries. Very sad.

Horse owners urged to be vigilant following Mendham horse attack
Police are appealing for witnesses to an incident in Mendham area of the county where a horse was seriously injured.
The incident took place at some point between 4pm and 6pm on Tuesday 29 October 2019 where a horse had sustained a significant wound to the neck and shoulder whilst it was out of its paddock.
The horse, a female and aged 18 years old, has had to be put to sleep as a result of the wound.
Officers investigating believe it to have been a deliberate attack. The horse was wearing a coat at the time which police believe was removed by the suspect prior to the attack.
Police are urging anybody that may know anything about the incident to come forward and also urge other horse owners to remain vigilant.
Sgt Brian Calver from the Rural Crime team said: "We would suggest other horse owners review their security measures in their paddocks and stables, and we are also urging the wider public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. This is a particularly disturbing attack and one which we don’t want to see repeated. It’s vital we catch those responsible as a matter of urgency.”
Anyone who has knowledge of the incident should contact police, quoting crime reference 37/65784/19.

Years ago I had a pony slashed with a machete .
The wound on the quarter was ten inches deep and over a foot long .
Our first thought it was some sort of field accident but it was not it soon came out that a local child had got a machete and slabbed her .
The pony had known the child since he was a baby his father used to bring him down to see the ponies his father died and his mum took to bottle .
I still am very conflicted about the whole thing it’s well over thirty years ago .
I don’t know what happened to the boy .

I also had a beautiful youngster attacked with a machette many, many years ago when I lived in the UK - both front legs where deeply slashed just beneath the fetlock across the pasterns. She was the most friendly and docile approachable horse in that herd , her beautiful soft and trusting personality sealed her fate . One so deep it almost completely severed a tendon. Absolutely no way it was a field accident and there was a spate of these grotesque attacks in the area where I kept my horses. I really feel for the owners in this incident - horrific to deal with the aftermath.

I've had this happen too - I will never be able to forget it, although I wish I could.
The person concerned was not prosecuted even though he admitted his actions and I am sure it didn't stop with my horses.
So sad for the people concerned.

I believe this poor horse had had its rug removed ? so most unlikely if that is correct.

In the 1970' or early 80's there were a whole raft of incidents where horses where wounded in the New Forest area, not on the forest actually but in private fields. The mare I was riding at the time was stabbed in the chest but luckily recovered, sadly others didn't. There were rumours regarding all manner of reasons for these incidents but I don't remember any one actually be caught. They were not self harm though.

If you open the FB page click on the photographs there are two images of the wound. It is an enormous deep slash with a sharp blade as the edges of the wound are clean cut. No way a field accident.

May I say how sorry I am to hear that so many people have suffered from similar incidents. Clearly the people who deliberately inflict these horrific assaults on horses need to be caught, prosecuted and made financially accountable for what they have done followed by being sentenced to being in-patients within a secure psychiatric institution for a period of time until they are no further threat to any animals or people.
