So, about two weeks ago I was ready to give up riding after seeing a video of me having my lesson. I'm coming up to my stage 2 exam soon and before I saw the video I thought I was OK(ish). I felt sorry for myself for a while and the good people of Horse and Hound Forums soon knocked some sense into me so I decided to do something about it. I went onto Amazon and searched for some good books that would help me sort out my vises. Yesterday "100 ways to improve your riding, common faults and how to cure them", by Susan McBane arrived. I read the sections on my faults and did what she said and it was like an epiphany moment! I have begun to sort out my rocking in the canter, my rising too high in the trot AND turning my legs outwards - IN ONE LESSON. I've spent more money than I have sense on lessons but this book has done more than ALL of them.
I'd be interested in anyone else's BEST BOOKS EVER?
By the way I am not Susan McBane or Amazon

My favourite would be either Horses never lie by Mark Rashid or In harmony with your horse by Clare Albinson. It just gives you a bit of a thought from the horses perspective

Aah I might have to invest! I love Showjumping - For Fun or Glory, it's super. Heather Moffat's Enlightened Equitation is also a good read. I've just ordered The Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage and am toying with the idea of getting Tug of War - Classical versus Modern Dressage. Anyone read the latter two? :D

J&C

I found the Susan McBane book HUGELY helpful, especially the chapters on dealing with bucking! Sorted me out completely. I have got her other book, 100 ways to improve your horse's behaviour, to work on next. I also like the 100 schooling exercises, I am always dipping into that one. And the Mark Rashid book, 'Horses Never Lie' was a total godsend, after being utterly befuddled by Kelly Marks. I like to read Michael Peace too, his techniques work.

As I have an iberian, Peter Maddison-Greenwell's book 'Living and working with the horse of Spain', is absolutely invaluable, particularly the information on how to plait them up!!!! I think my horse's mane would have been pulled without it so definitely couldn't live without that one!

I have a bloody brilliant book called Training Showjumpers by Anthony Paalman. Its old school but is insanely good given to me by my RI.

Even if your not a showjumper its just a good book with some very good techniques and methods which seem to have gotten lost in recent years.

My favourites are;
No Foot No Horse by Gail Williams and Martin Deacon (who's just shod my horse-brilliant farrier)

Basic Training the Young Horse by Reiner Klimke

The Far Away Horses by Buck Brannaman on who The Horse Whisperer was inspired by. If you like Mark Rashid, you'll likely like him too.

Anything By Micheal Peace but nothing by Heather Moffat. Her writing style leaves me cold.

Now off to Amazon to check out some of the books you guys have mentioned....

Have read some of Susan Mcbane's articles and always agree with what she says, so will definately buy the book now!
Also have 101 Schooling Exercises. Very good, but I have terrible memory and can rarely remember them when I get in the school!
Have loads of books and videos by Sylvia Loch. The only trouble with the vids is that they always send me to sleep! I think her voice is too soothing!
Also have PMG's book about Horses of Spain.
My favourite book of all time is 'This is The Spanish Horse' by Juan Llamas. It's really the Bible for PRE owners!

I've also ordered Practical Horse Whispering (Threshold picture guides). These guides are so useful - lots of pictures and to-the-point. I keep checking the post to see if it's arrived yet!:)

I've just bought it :D
I got someone to video me the other week and realised I could do alot better.

I'm really excited for it to come and try it out now :)

Another book I've been recommended but havent got round to reading is, I think, ride with your mind. My aunty is always telling me to buy it but I've never got round it yet.

I have both those books! Maybe it is time I reread them and saw what I could improve too! :)

I have 'ride with your mind' and while I know alot of people really get on with it, I find it just muddles my mind! When I am riding I need something I can understand instantly as it seems I just don't have the brain power, unfortunatly for me RWYM didn't fit into that box for me. I have a riding pilates book instead as I thought if I can strengthen my core and understand my own levelness it might be a different route to the same end! That said, some of the RWYM bits about making your seat more secure as a less confident rider were really good.

I know what you mean, I flicked through it once and it was too wordy. Not too wordy, but it just didn't work for me
And thats what I was recommended it for, the seat advice, and was told it was really beneficial.

That said, if I read more than two pages I might have got more out of it

Love Mark Rashid and have read and re-read nearly all of his.

Hmm, Buck Brannaman and Susan McBane - have problem with bucking - toddles off to amazon
