I've decided full livery at yard Sol is currently on is a waste of time and that it below a basic standard of care a horse should get .
As suspected Sol wasn't being fed WHAT I TOLD THEM TO FEED HER even though we pay for feed separately so no reason she wasn't getting fed as she needs to put on weight .
We pay for her to be lunged and she hasn't been lunged in over 2 weeks
She is 'groomed' to a very low standard
I noticed she had cut her leg (she has white legs blood is hard to miss) cut hadn't been cleaned etc.
Regularly left in with no hay/ not sufficient hay to last her the whole day .
YH allowed Farrier to 'smack' her with the rasp and thought it was acceptable
Very limited turnout even though there is an empty field she could go in .
Limited Bedding

Am now feeling so crap for letting this happen

And I've handed in my notice but she has to stay there for another 4 weeks or I lose £400 and have to pay for alternative stabling for her also .
I have just completely lost faith in people and how they think this is ok to look after her this way

Aw that sounds rubbish. Atleast you have realised that this is happening before it got even worse. My mare is on full(ish) livery and although my YM is lovely her groom is tbh a bit pants and i quite often find her without water. It has been ALOT better since mentioning it.

I think you have to have ALOT of trust in the yard to have a horse on full livery and if that trust is broken then you will forever be wondering if they are doing what they are saying they are doing. (if that makes sense)

I hope you can find somewhere lovely for you horse and you dont end up in this situation again.

(can you get there a bit more regularly whist she is still there so you know things are being done properly?)

I dont know anything about your situation, so forgive me if I speak out of turn! Is Sol the mare who you were having some issues with under saddle? I'm assuming that she is on full livery, and that you dont have too much to do with her day to day care....if she is being treated badly in the stable, could this be contributing to how she is behaving when ridden? My own father, who was a farrier, used to abuse horses (in later years anyway) - he would hit them in the belly with a hammer or rasp, whichever came to hand first

and it certainly made them nervous. It sounds to me like the yard she is on has pretty poor standards, so I guess it would be best for you to move ASAP! Is there any way you can put her on DIY for the next month and do her yourself until you move, or is this not possible?

Again, I'm assuming many things, sorry if I'm in the wrong!

I live 45mins away from yard Sol is on , I can't drive and theyre is no-one to give me lifts etc so I can put her on DIY livery for the remaining month .
I haven't a clue how they are treating her in the stable but doubt that it is any better than anything else .
Am trying to make urgent arrangments for her to come home in the next few days , and to beg, steal or borrow the money to pay her livery

I have never been fortunate enough to have mine on Full Livery but you have every right to dictate how your horse should be looked after because a) Full livery is very expensive so you are paying for a top class service & b) She is your pet after all and you put trust in these people to look after her how she should be. I would be extremely upset. I would only Full Livery her with someone you know or have been recommended. I would be reluctlent to leave her there another 4 weeks but £400 is alot of money to lose. Just keep a very close eye on her during this time.
 
Well I would actually say you have grounds to take her away and not pay for the final month, if her 'care' has been as lacking as you say! Have you already paid the money, or is it on direct debit? If its the latter, I would cancel it, and tell them to stick it......

FatHorse - Yes full livery was an absolute luxury for me and am regretting every second , just want my horse back to muck out !!!

I'm with MizElz on the assumption you have a contract, and they have broken part of it, this would mean you shouldn't be bound to give a month's notice. I appreciate you may want to keep things reasonably amicable though for the sake of a quiet life, but £400 is a lot, you should be entitled to a good standard of care for that sort of money.
 
surely you could just forfeit the 400 and move now? As you will have to pay the 4 weeks if you are there, is the 400 a deposit or the livery for the month? I wouldn't want to leave my horse there

£400 is the livery for the month .
It means that £400 (full livery) + £200/£250(Livery at different yard ) so if I can find £250 she will be moved , if I can't she will just have to stay

If the yard is not providing the level of care you are paying for and you have let them know you feel the standards are not as agreed I don't blame you for moving. It's a pity you have to stay another month - is that because you have paid a month in advance?
 
Have you formally complained?

If you haven't, then put your complaints in writing, then if you do decide to leave, and not give notice, you have got it writing that they had broken their side of the contract.

If you can sort somewhere else out to take her, and get the transport etc arranged, I would put in a detailed letter of complaint, pay everything you owe for what you have had until the time of leaving, and then leave, without paying notice.

Just make sure you have everything prepared so you can take the horse away, and all your equipment, before you burn your bridges!
 
April has not been payed for is due on tuesday .

have just frantically rang YM (where other horse is kept) and begged him to buy my old boys saddle of me to pay for livery . Just don't know where I stand with YO can I complain ?
 
So if you have not paid for April then you could in theory bugger off on Monday and not pay any more....... I would rather risk them coming after me (which they probably wont) than risk leaving the horse there another month when he certainly wont be treated any better!!!
 
If I were you the first thing I would do is go and have a serious word with YO. Detail everything you are not happy about and ask what she is prepared to do about it. The only thing I wouldn't moan to her about is the farrier thing, only because that isn't really her concern imo unless it is a yard farrier that you are made to use. If it isn't then pick that up with him or change.
I'm on full livery and if I'm unhappy with anything I always go and see YO incase she is not aware of the things that aren't being done correctly.

If you have already done this to no avail and can find a stable at short notice then just leave, paying what you owe but not giving your notice - you wouldn't be the first!

IMO I wouldn't waste £400 as to me that is quite a lot of money going down the drain! Yes, I agree for the money you are paying, it isn't good enough but there are far worse places for your horse to be I am sure!
I would ''hand my notice in'' so to speak and wait the 4 weeks seeing as you have to pay for it (contract) then move her!
 
What a bummer! Although I understand people's reasons for having horses on full livery, the standards of care I've seen here, at least, fall FAR below those that I'm used to giving my horses. Sadly DIY isn't available so I shall have to take full and still be on top of grooms to do a good job...

I can't believe anyone who has horses would treat a horse like that, especially when they're getting paid for it. What an awful situation.

Please don't blame yourself though, it really isn't your fault. We all always try and do the best for our horses and, in putting him/her on full livery, you expect them to care for your hrose as you would. You have done the best thing by handing your notice in. If you can, try and get up there regularly and check on her. Poor horse. Hope she is ok. Hugs x

Have put in a letter of complaint to YO as she has nothing to do with care of horses and its the yards staff who I am upset with .

I used to work on a competition yard with very expensive dressage horses, the owner had a couple of liveries to fill the empty boxs.....she was always moaning at us for 'feeding the liveries too much' there were a couple of TB's that were quite underweight and needed more roughage...it got to the point where she took over making the evening feeds up ( we fed them all straights) and we used to sneak more into them and feed them as much hay as was possible without her noticing...she always said 'they didnt need it' (to keep the bills down) but with her horses it was different!! I know what a conditioned horse should look like and i know its hard to keep costs down but surely if your charging 150 quid a week you should be feeding them what they ought to be fed??

IME this sounds like full livery scenarios of which I have had personal experience. It is a nightmare when you leave instructions for the yard about the most basic things (feed requirements etc) and no matter how many times you raise it they never seem to do what you wish. A lot is due to cost cutting.
My horse is now at a fantastic yard. I did, however, go through the contract at the beginning and added a lot of things - to make sure it was all agreed up front. There are good yards out there - hope you get one.
 
If you have somewhere else to take her do it, then dont pay the £400.00 as their service is "not fit for the purpose of", bunch of amatuers by the sounds of it.
