This is truly awful and a warning to everyone who loans out their horses

could that happen in just six weeks...?

One thing though, why didnt the owner go check her horse every so often. if it were mine i would be checking every fortnight for at least the first six months because this seems to happen far too often.

Lots of people on the site asking that but she did say the loaner stopped contact and when the owner went to view the mare was often not there because the loaner had re-loaned onto another boy to ride.

Complicated and truly tragic for the horse

To be honest I haven't seen 3 of my loan ponies since they went out on loan - all 2 years ago. The difference is 2 are loaned to people I work with and they frequently show me pictures of their latest bouts of mischeif - they are shetlands! And they always look well cared for. The 3rd - I am always getting sent pics on Facebook, I know someone else at the yard who would quickly tell me if anything were amiss and he is still doing well showing which he wouldnt be if he was mistreated.

On the flip side I have had a pony on loan for the past 10years and his owners live in Devon, I live in Scotland - and again, show results, pics and phone calls prove that he is still in as good a for as ever.

I do keep in touch with everyone, they are never just forgotton about because they are not here.

If it's just taking you to your facebook page type exactly how it is shown below into your search box

RIP Millie, a beautiful horse that didnt deserve what she got.

It should come up even if you only type part of it in

What was the reason for her being PTS? It doesn't give much info, i'm surprised that can happen in that time frame too.

ETA: i re read that and it sounds as though i think it's not real, that's not the case i was just wondering exactly what happened :)

This drives me mad when people say this sort of weight loss cant happen in such a short space of time & there must be something else wrong. It can & it does happen!

This is truely awful. However, it can happen to any horse. Especially those that are sold. Loaning seems to get such a bad press, but just as many horses, if not more, are maltreated by their owners. The only way to make sure your horse is okay is never to sell it and if you loan, to visit weekly. Not really practical. However, luckily, the majority of loaners treat their horses well.

That is just disgusting, I have 2 on loan at the moment, although luckily for me they are both within 5 miles of home, one is with my best friend and one is with my instructor and i visit each of them twice weekly, so its more of a share/loan situation but I feel very lucky that they are both with folk that I trust them 100%.

Yes, the horse looked skinny and had a nasty over reach injury but I have seen horses in far worse condition recover.

Why did she have it pts?

The story is that she loaned the mare out to someone as the owner had had a bad fall from breaking a friend's youngster. She told the loanee that the mare needed shoes and that she would even pay for them (as well as feed) as she didn't mind paying for part of the care considering she would have been doing it anyway if she hadn't fallen off.

She tried to contact the loanee several times and was told that a boy was also loaning/riding the mare, as well as the daughter of the loanee. The daughter is fifteen and is apparantly the one that was caring for the mare during the 6weeks. Then contact became harder between owner and loanee and when trying to visit she found that the mare often wasn't there (for whatever reasons being ridden or whatever) and then when she did finally find the mare the pictures show quite clearly the state she was in.

She wasn't fed, her shoes came off and she was ridden into the ground (you can see how short her hooves are in the pictures).

Hope that explains it a bit more
