This is unbelievable - pic

Oh God - I have just found one of her taken 3 weeks before I went away.

Do you think she could be ill??????????????????????????

She was out in torrential rain (remember last week?) without a waterproof rug on her so one livery told me. Her feed was given with the other horses in the field so she probably never ate. No hay despite there being no grass. They said they wormed her but I don't think they did. She is 20. She gets ridden once a week so she's not well built anyway. This however, is a serious drop in weight. I know she's a TB and they are spindly but this is too far.

Even more of a reason to take action IMO. She is elderly and taking this and her breed into account, requires more maintenance and care than your average horse which she was denied. That is borderline on cruelty in my opinion. I recommend that you worm her again (I wouldn't trust that she'd been wormed while your away. I just wouldn't trust that she'd been done whilst you were away) and put her on a high calorie, non heating feed for a week or so. Weight tape her on a daily basis to record just how much weight her is putting back on. Photographs are also good evidence too, as is her weight prior to going on holiday if you know it.

That is shocking how much condition she has lost in that time. She doesn't appear ill, her coat is still all glossy and nice. There hasn't been a lot of grass due to the weather, I just think your old yard didn't care for her properly and give her what you needed. I'd have been beyond incandescent if one of my horses looked like that when they were supposed to have been being cared for. And no doubt you were paying handsomely for the "service"...

Good for you for voting with your feet and moving her.

That is awful :( I hope you reported the yard to the BHS?

Not all yards are like this, I worked in a full livery yard in Surrey and we fully mucked out every day, and the horses were brushed and cooed over like our own.
We had one lady that insisted on a whole new deep shavings bed every week, and she got it and another that drew lines on the walls to mark where she wanted the banks to be in the stable, and she drew marks on the rug straps to make sure the rug was done up on the right hole!
A little excessive you may think, we never moaned as we were happy they loved their horses and were paying £700 a month!

Thats a lot of weight to lose in three weeks!.....I think for peace of mind I would be getting the vet out and take some bloods, also blood test for Tape worm,

To lose that much in such a short time, it would have to be standing in a stable with NOTHING to eat or drink :-(

That is totally disgraceful and unforgiveable. You must report them and make it common knowledge in the area - wish you both great happiness and peace of mind on your new yard

 What was their excuse??

Ok the convseration was as follows:

Me "Can I speak to you please?"
Her "Why?"
Me "I am concerned about my horse's weight. She has not been given the correct rugs. She is getting on a bit and not a good doer like your horse. I want the mid weight on her. Its very warm and waterproof."
Her "No, its too hot, she will sweat and its not right for her, its too hot"
Me " let me take that risk. Its my decision to make. I want it on. I also want her in by day to eat plenty of hay and I need her feed increased"
Her " I don't like the way you are speaking to me, you are rude and I don't like it"
Me "I think its time we call it a day, this can't go on"
Her "Fine, I *****ing hate you anyway, you are rude and I don't like it. I want 4 weeks notice before you leave"

I walked off the yard on Saturday and took her away today.

Poor mare, glad you have got her out of there. Have to say it was bloody cold last week as well as wet, we had a couple of poor doers who both dropped weight over a couple of days and suddenly looked ribby again but if I had left them in the care of a yard and they had dropped weight I would have been furious!

Terrible what a horrible livery owner as well. Listening to your dialogue she runs a livery how?

I would contact your vet just incase she is coming down with something or tape worm?? he may also be able to offer you advice over what action to take? x

Hope your girly is feeling a bit better and warmer now poor lady x

Good job you did leave the way she spoke to you!! No need to take it out on a horse though whether you like someone or not. Bloomin heck, dreadful woman. Better off out. Hope your horse is doing better.

Thanks, I will take a few pics each weekend to have a look at her progress. I don't want to call the vet just yet - I'd rather just put it down to underfeeding than anything more. If after the weekend she's not right I will call them.

Heck, I've just seen where you are! Would you mind pm'ing me which yard this is? I have a couple of friends looking at the moment and I'd hate them to move into your vacant space!

If she was mine,I would worm her tbh. Especially as you suspect it may not have been happening. Then if she doesnt pick up get the vet to check her. If she hasnt been wormed the vet will possibly do it anyway and charge you for the privilege. It could also be teeth problems.Or if fed in the field maybe she was bullied away from her dinner.

That is ridiculous. I certainly wouldn't be paying your last month's livery, as they clearly did b*gger all. It's great that you've got her moved, hopefully she'll do better on the new yard.

As long as I had good documentary evidence of before and after and reliable witness statements then Yes I would (I am though a vindictive sod!).

If not BHS registered then not sure who to report to. I would go to a solicitor and get a letter sent to ask for livery money back unless you know a friendly journalist on the local paper!

Also remember that revenge is really best eaten cold......I moved from a livery yard the day I caught the YO hitting my 3 year old round the face with a lunge cavesson till his teeth rattled, and she insisted on a months notice, I had to pay as she had put a lock on his stabledoor and I just wanted him out of there...all in all a bloody traumatic day.

Now her OH had Just finished building a new block of stables and had happily posed for pictures and video as he gave he-man poses holding up planks of wood and hanging off ladders.....the satisfaction of sending the footage off to the Dept of Works 6 months later who had had him on incapacity benefit for the previous 8 years due to his bad back was wonderful, even better was reading the report in the local paper of the courtcase.

*crawls back under stone"
