Went to get the wee man in from the field and found this ;

It looks as if hes been attacked my a leapard lol ... all across his bottom, one untop of hindquarters (dunno how it got there!!), right along his side so cant put a saddle on as if u touch them he flinchs away, lots on his shoulder area too and some on his legs :( We think he was backed into the barbwire fence by another horse and rubbed along the fence at speed to get out of the way. grrr hate barbwire :mad: oh and theres also this;

Swollen just below the knee. Think it may be a kick, seemed to swell up more over time, bit of heat and bit of fluid at the bottom of the swelling which moves around. Clipped it to see if there was a puncher but nothing so we shall be getting a visit from the vet if it doesnt improve. Gosh what a day lol ... god im a moan :p

Awful stuff - hope hes ok. Didnt think barb wire was used much nowadays for horses. All seems to be electric tape round us. Hope his knee turns out to be ok and glad you didnt have to have the vet for stitches.

Looks like a knee to me, am a bit more worried that he only has 3 legs, lol, dont think those cuts will take long to heal, can you not electric tape off the barb wire?

Look on the bright side - your horse could have done this!

This was when my retired lad decided he liked the look of the field next door - broke the leccy fencing post and went through the barbed wire 2nd fence.
hmm

Wow that looks bad!!!!! Youngster on our yard did something similar and went through the skin right down to the bone. He had to have skin grafts and its unbelieveable how well its healed. Barbed wire wasnt involved in that one.

Lol, see what you mean!
What sort of company is in the field? A bullied horse will be forced into any sort of field boundary from my experience. Not neccessarily being cornered either.
Hope the poor lad recovers ok and has a peaceful time in his field

2nd photo is his hock

this actually made me laugh for the first time today ;) i can asure you it is a knee lol ...
The fluid kinda makes like a clicking noise like under your finger when you move it (cant act hear it, just feels like it is) its really weird! ... Unfortunatly the whole yard is barbwire fencing and no one seems to care apart from me :( well he'll not be in the field over night again!

OMG Vicki :eek: thats really bad!!!

I would be very warey of a fluid swelling making a clicking noise (or crackling if you think it might be classed as that) I would keep a very close eye on that swelling and if it gets at all worse do get the vet out.

crackling noise/feeling, thats the description i was looking for :p ... It was slightly swollen when i got him in and then got larger to the size in the pic around 7pm-ish! Although he doesnt look lame on it, which is strange!

I swore about 3 years ago I would never EVER EVER put a horse out with barbe wire. My lad willl have the horrendous scars for his whole life!! I'll never forget the day I found him like that! Took about 3 months to fully recover and a big juicy vet bill :(

ah ok crackling is a sign of gas in the fluid... which might be a sign of infection by a specific type of bacteria either about on the soil/on the skin surface which would cause cellulitis/lymphagitis (does he have any history of this?).

I think I would speak to your vet in the morning.

I have found a nice link in the past just trying to track it down (that was for a pony that was crackling all over when it moved and being untreated... it did survive :) )

OP give these threads a read through. it might not be that by the way and obviously is not at the level of this pony's but it is worth being aware of just because of what you said about the noise. I don't want to send you worrying that it is that. I have never seen a case myself but I do research on a similar organism to that bacteria.

I can honestly say i have no idea what that is!!! How can it get infected if theres no cut on the swelling :confused:

ETS Thanks for links, shall start reading now :D

Could be a puncture wound that your not seeing.

Better to be safe than sorry, I would be getting some danilon and anitbiotics for it.

I am guessing now, but think if absolutely no skin damage and if the barbed wire damage only occurred today it prob isn't then as I dont 'think' it would travel that much that quickly. I think it affects muscles more too but cant be sure atm.

Its just what you said about the noise triggered something... and I prob spend too long studying similar things ;) :D

oh well in any case think of it as semi useful education :)

haha you scared the tripe outa me :p i thought i was going to go to the yard and find a swollen head poking over the door haha ... well we think it was done this morning as we found him at 2pm and it looked very fresh and there was a tiny bit of swelling on leg but got bigger as day went on. Deffo no cut near swelling either as i clipped it to make sure lol so he has a part baldy leg now :p ... Will see how it is in the morning then call vet

Poor boy poor you, i HATE barbed wire, my mare done the same last yr twice, this year twice she tore both back legs last July when jumping over the fence to see a horny gelding, then in october she totally massacared her hock, torn to shreds with a lovely puncuture wound and gashes. Jan this year she done her knee, another puncutre wound, and a few weeks ago her fetlock....every inch of field is now electric taped ....i dont think anyone in my area used anything but barb wire which a total pain in the ass :(
i hope he heals quickly

Ouch, echo your feelings on barbwire and know exactly how your poor boy must feel. When I was about 9 I got bucked off into a barbwire fence, got hooked on top strand by the back of my knees, fence had to be cut either side of me and I went to hospital with the fence still attached to my legs. Had the most awful scars, which thankfully over the years have started to fad. I still have a problem going anywhere near barbwire though.
Hope your boy soon is better x
