I am trying to get insurance for my boy, and he was at a yard where due to the stafs fault, and the fact they would call the vet BEFORE me, my horse is now excluded for Colic, anything to do with breathing and possibly his feet! :(

He only had colic as they put him in a LUSH paddock full of Dockins when I instructed he was to be in starvation.
He had breathing issues as he was kept in a field with a horse who had an undiagnosable persistant cough - and buttercups!
His foot was because they had to go past a building site (YO new house!) to get to field and tehre was stuff lying about. It was only like 3-4mm and didnt go into the foot enough to doanything - yet they still treated him like it had.

And the headshaking which was from stress of being in a group barn for over 2 months with No turnout (that was a diff yard).

Is there any point insuring him for vets fees?? Or at all really?

Get insurance with the NFU. they don't just put blanket exclusions on. If your vet says your current claim is totally new and nothing to do with nay previous claim they will pay out.

Well definitely get public liability insurance, you need cover in case he causes an accident. Other than that it depends upon your financial means and what he's worth to you.

If he needed treatment could you get the money to pay? Maybe a credit card if not cash? If the treatment he needed was hugely expensive would you consider PTS or would you want to save him at all costs?

it must be dreadful to know that all your horses problems were caused by the staff! you should be grateful that they spotted the colic! you could have asked him to be separated from the coughing horse and i have never known buttercups to make them cough! and most horses feet can cope with different surfaces ( one of the things req to get a horse going well barefoot) and headshaking through stress 2 years ago .. did you not give him sufficient exercise and adlib forage to help with thie no turnout (probably a reason for this and also your choice to leave him on a yard with no turnout? However on a positive note you should be able to get vets cover for him, phone around and ask for quotes you might need a vetting certificate to say he is in good health and has no recurring problems. a cheaper option might be to get the bhs gold membership for about £60 per year and put the other £3 to 400 pounds in a savings account esp for vets bills and hope you

If your horse has had any problems be it a sarcoid, whatever, the insurance companies have to know about it and they WILL EXCLUDE it.
I was going to change insurances but theres no point as the other companies will also exclude the Sarcoid.
You need the basic and liability just incase.

Ok, they spotted it - but they caused it - why woul dyou put a horse that is an extreme good dooer into a field full of dockins and long grass??!1 It wasnt severe, vet just looked him over and said no food, walk out in hand - didnt need treatment. In fact 2 others had a tummy ache to - same symptoms but vet wasnt called for them as the owners were up when they were brought in.......they were fine.
I didnt know said horse had a cough till after mine did and I was told that he had it for a while and vet couldnt get to bottom of it - and I though it was known that buttercups can cause respiritory issues (as vet advised).
He is barefoot - had been for years - this is why he was fine as the nail didnt actually even puncture sole - he had no heat in foot, no lameness either.
Had I been called then I would have picked his foot out and the nail would have fallen out -as it did when the vet did it.

As for the being in - I had no choice. He was on Working Livery and did have adlib hay - they had bales put in - and he was being worked in the school so he wasnt permenantly in just didnt like the situation. I had a small child and no transport and he was coming back from loan so this was only option at the time - and had it not been the winter we had he would have been out 24/7.

I will try NFU as I feel these are just situation issues he had as he has never displayed any issues before or since.

I love him, but if any operation etc more than his worth it would be PTS.

Take care even with nfu, we just cancelled ours as they have changed the terms from 'exclude specific excluded things' to 'exclude anything youve ever had the vet about'. Since Id had the vet for a few bits but hadnt claimed cos Im nice, I wasnt best pleased to be penalised, I might as well have claimed for every little thing like other people do.

And this was after over 10 years of insuring at over £500 a year and never any single claim on the policy, they just stated it in the renewal letter.

Now they might be better than that when it comes down to the claim itself, but Im not going to be on tenterhooks and begging them like that when horse is sick!! so money into savings ac. instead.

It has always been the case that you HAVE to inform your insurance company (any company) of any visit your horse has had throughout the year that wasn't routine and they could well exclude even if you haven't claimed (and if you hadn't told them and your vet puts in your claim form that you had it in the past you're in REAL trouble!). You always might as well claim for every little thing because you have to tell them anyway!

My friend didn't tell her insurance company her horse had had mild seedy toe a couple of years ago (not NFU) and then he had again quite badly as was going to cost a lot of money they refused to pay out cause on the horses veterinary history they could see he'd had it before.

That's why, personally I think the NFU exclusion policy is now better. No blanket exclusions and if your horse hasn't had the problem before they will pay out no problem. You actually know where you stand a lot better!! The policy has been this way for over a year by the way.

we were only told about it as a new policy a few weeks back at renewal so it must be less than a year for us. Going to save the money instead of lining their pockets Im afraid!

Its the defiinition of the scope/definition of the problem that's entirely at their whim that I dislike. Im sure NFU is the best of the lot, but the lot are not entirely whiter than white.

So really, There isnt much point in having insurance. As his purchase price is 1.5k. I cant get a CC(to much debt) however my dad does have access to cash should an emergency arise. Will just get BHS insurance.

I will insure the mental pony though as he is too smart for his own good and I feel he will cause probelms. lol
