I saw this pic on the internet and it looks shameful to me. Have I underestimated the power of the donkey???

I don't think it's fair to label someone cruel from this photo alone. Uninformed would be my guess/hope. If the girl knows she is going to cause harm to the donkey but does it anyway then I would say yes it is cruel.

I don't think you can tell from a static image at all. No-one can really tell how big the donkey or the girl is and she may have sat on it purely for a picture not actually ridden it. Donkeys carry much heftier burdens than that girl!

Normally I'd agree with this but this donkey does have a base wide stance!

The angle the photo has been taken at probably makes the girl look bigger than she is and the donkey seem smaller.

That said I think she is far too big for it and I hope that she was only board to have the picture taken.

Not sure why she's showing the world she's capable of 'riding' with no hands; poor bloody thing's not going anywhere with her on his back!

Clearly the girl in the photo is unaware that she is perhaps too big for the donkey. I would feel awful for her if she were to stumble across this thread. What she did is of course not right, but she probably had no idea. The poor donkey has probably had much worse to deal with, bless him.

Really? The donkey is half her height and built like a toothpick; you have to be pretty damn dense not to realise you're too big.

I agree, its a very unfortunate angle, I still think the girl is too big for the donkey but do think the pic makes things look worse than they are

I would seriously question her sense if she thought she was the right size... Would she think its ok ride a large dog?

Common sense is (sadly) not really that common. You have to remember that not everyone has any notion of what equines are capable of. Plus I guess she will have gone by what the handler of the poor donkey has told her. He or she deserves to be slated more than this girl.

Absolutely- non 'equiney' people will understandably have no conceit of what donkeys can do, other than carry Mary and pull huge loads. It's the donkey 'operator' that needs to be held responsible.

I'm not into sheep or pigs but an ounce of common sense would say not to get on them. Sorry but she should be ashamed, as should everyone else involved with it, poor poor little donk!

I don't think that's quite right. My OH is completely unhorsey and every once in a while he'll say "She looks massive on that horse!" or "That horse is so fat". Just cause they're not horsey it doesn't mean they're stupid.

I think it's more about common sense and having a bit of compassion to be honest.

I'm kind of with Rara with regards to awareness, I've never really considered donkey strength and all most people know is that they have been used for carrying adults on beaches and in much of the rest of the world for many hours a day.

I deleted a post where I said I suspect I know that girl and she would be mortified to see it and be accused of cruelty. Like most of the population she would have no inkling of what a donkey can/cannot carry... blame should be laid solely at the feet of the owner, not the unwary and uneducated public

You have to remember that many have got used to pictures/films/TV where donkeys are shown carrying obese Spaniards and huge loads.

Ummm, As it happens I know that girl. (she is in her 20's), and this was taken on her honeymoon last year. She isn't remotely 'horsey', and they were just doing the touristy things (think they went to somewhere like Bali).
She would indeed be saddened to see this picture is being made fun of. As it is, she has a very nice figure, much better than mine.
OP, on her behalf, can you ask to get this removed, I don't think it is fair to go any further with this.

^^ i agree.

Fools Motto- nobody is saying she dsnt have a fabulous figure (i would love to have a figure like hers!) or that she overweight in anyway, just that she is too big for that poor donkey

Agreed.

No one's making fun of her. The only thing that has been said is that she should have known better, horsey or not.

I'm fed up of animal welfare being compromised for fear of maybe hurting someone's feelings or potentially offending someone. People SHOULD be saddened if they hurt an animal, intentionally or not. The girl in the picture is old enough to know better.

I understand, but she wouldn't have known - as I said not horsey, and if ''donkey rides'' are part of the honeymoon fun, then she would go on one.
It does highlight many tour guides and tourists alike simply don't ''get it'', but I feel there is very little that can be achieved from just moaning about one photo.

Yes, nobody is saying the girl is overweight at all, just too big for the donkey. She looks a similar size/weight to myself (although I was not blessed with such a generous bust) and I definitely don't think I'm overweight!

I am actually very surprised at the amount of people that are saying the girl doesn't need to know any better. If someone posted a picture of small pony being ridden by an adult that is clearly too big, there would be uproar!

Hmm, new poster starts thread ridiculing a readily identifiable person.

OP, you could have easily blurred out this girl's face. What's your beef with her?

Also, I would not expect a totally non horsey person to know what weight a donkey should carry.

Do you know how much an ostrich camel or Elephant can carry? Or how old they should be to be working? How much a husky team should pull? A surprising amount of people have literally no contact with large animals. It'd be the fault of a pony ride operator if they let an adult on a mini too. I doubt they were worried about offending her by saying she's too big, you'd hope she'd realise they meant tall seeing as she's not exactly hefty!
