This makes me so angry!!

Sorry, I didnt read the article, too long :), but to me, I've seen worse, or at least the same, watching horse racing

I think he was harsh and possibly for different reasons than racing but I still see it as similar. (Does that make sense?)

But I haven't jumped since I was 14, about 4 years ago so I don't know much about it

Im sorry but I dont think you can comment unless you know the situation and the person. get your sticky beaks out!

the horse looks fed, he's obviously competing so hes in the public eye, there are much MUCH worse situations going on, and you know NOTHING about that particularly situation.

Totally out of order behaviour. That horse was never going over that jump, and beating the hell out of it after the fact was never going to make a blind bit of difference. Really poor horsemanship.

Flamehead, if Puzzle refused a jump, would you beat her like that?

Wow, I don't honestly don't care about the situation and I don't need to know about that particular situation to be disgusted by that. I'll keep my sticky beak in, thankyou very much, and wait to see what sort of action is taken against him.

I'm sorry flamehead, I don't compete, but I don't why it is necessary to beat an animal over a jump. I wouldn't let my daughter do this to her pony and the pony is a right little sod at times. Yes, there are much worse situations going on but that doesn't mean we should ignore the milder stuff either. And if such behaviour was not considered unecessary why is there a three strikes rule?

Spudlet - no, but shes also not a competition horse, and at the moment she's not jumping (haha!).

But, for example, my OHs horse (who is quite possibly the most contented horse, and is most certainly NOT abused in any way) does get a smack when he's being a t*t, which I have to say happens quite alot when jumping! Firstly its by no means hard, it doesn't leave marks or welts or whatever, but it does get his attention.

My OH is no horse beater.

What I'm saying is not that it was right, but that you don't know the situation. Clearly its not great, and he SHOULD be pulled up for it, but you don't know the person, you don't know the situation, so get your noses out!

Does that explain it better?

Well then I think you are a hypocrite to say that something that would not be ok for your horse is ok for another horse.

A smack is one thing, that was not a smack. It was a beating. Not accpetable under ANY circumstances.

No but she doesnt need telling off at the moment, shes not competing. However, if she bites me, yes she does get a smack and yelled at. I'm sure for someone looking in from the outside, watching me give her a smack and yell at that exact moment, it probably looks like horse abuse!!! But you know as well as anyone how much I bloody love that horse is she is by no means abused.

What I'm saying is you don't know that situation.

No I don't because it is NEVER EVER acceptable to BEAT a horse repeatedly in that way! Never - no matter what the situation - NEVER.

We are not talking about a smack, but a prolonged beating. Have you even watched the video?

See, the older I get, the less need I see to really ever hit a horse.

If a horse stops sj, the chances are it wasn't presented right, and the horse didn't feel like it could go. And even if the horse dislikes it and was presented correctly and still refused then hitting it isn't going to make the situation any better!!

The amount of times I see people (unaff, BS and BE) hit their horse after a stop, and prob 95% of the time, it is totally uncalled for. People invariably are totally wrong to the fence, or drop the contact, or any other numerous faults, and then tell the horse off!

Yep, I'm not perfect, and do drop the contact and get wrong strides to a fence. If I get a stop, I take a breath, circle and represent. Simples.

This forum is so fluffy at times it is stupid.
Yes he should have been done for the three and out rule, but I honestly can't see where some of you come from, you know nothing about the horse or the rider, and I doubt a lot about the ins and outs of competing at that level.

I don't think anyone on here is saying it is wrong to give a horse a smack, its BEATING it we object to. You also say he should get pulled up for it - so its only competition officals have the right to comment, not us lowly sorts?

Competition officials and the people who run the chocolate fountain stalls...

But indiat, we're just not WORTHY of commenting on this situatuation, don't you see?!:cool:

^^^This sums it all up for me!

I mean, don't get me wrong, I do carry a whip when I ride, but I will only use it lightly, and even then only if the horse needs a little reminder that yes, they can keep on trotting, and no it won't kill them to canter!

If a horse bit me, they get a tap on the nose, nothing more. They learn that biting isn't acceptable!

It seems we are not worthy of having opinions on this matter indiat.... Only those who compete at such high levels can!

I hate seeing horses being clearly beaten with a whip in the rush of the moment therefore I am Fluffy......LOL

Clearly! Personally, I think if you whale on an animal you have lost control but then I'm just someone who has been riding for 20 years and spent thousands on lessons with good instructors. Just because I don't want to compete means I know nothing. But I'm always happy to be proved wrong - in what situation is this not only OK, but good horsemanship? I would prefer for some one to use reasoned argument to prove me wrong and I will give an apology with good grace, but please don't sneer.

So you guys have never lost your temper? How wonderful to be you.

I'm not saying its RIGHT, I'm just saying that you don't know the situation so take your sticky beaks elsewhere.

Yes I've lost my temper - never beaten an animal through it though. It's called being an adult in control of oneself, which comes in quite handy when around animals.

As one of my favourite dog books says - how can a person who cannot control themselves hope to ever control an animal?

I hope you never lose your temper with your horse like that.

Of course I have lost my temper, however I put the horse away in it's stable or field and walk away. If I am at a show I will hand my horse to my groom and go for a walk. The riders temper should not be taken out on the horse end of!

I also do not like being told WHAT to do and WHAT opinions to have.......tis the joy of the freedom of speach and thought m'dear ;)

I've never taken my temper out on a horse, no. "Sticky beaks", what are you on about?

Well of course we have lost our tempers! I've lost count the number of times I've been frustrated around horses, but more often than not it is MY actions that cause the misunderstanding, and I'm learning to fix this.

But there's no place for a temper when around animals. You will not get the results you want through anger, or a petulant strop.
