This may be a dumb question but.....

That's a good question , i don't think a fly rug has any wicking properties , have you got a plain cotton sheet you could use. He's bound to roll so it'll get dirty , but it would wick the moisture underneath away and at least would be easy to wash in your own machine?

As long as it's not cold he should be alright but don't turn out if it is windy or cold as he might get a chill, better to walk him about instead to dry off (might also stop him rolling and spoiling all your hard work!)

I've got a waffle rug so I could turn him out in that. What about if I put the waffle underneath the fly sheet?

It's always windy at our yard so yes it may be idea to walk him dry rather than turn him out. But as above, would he get cold with a waffle and fly sheet on? He's a cob so can cope with colder temps but then if he's wet it might not be a good idea

I would go with just the waffle but not the fly sheet as it would trap the water in - i think - if you keep an eye on him he should dry off pretty quick with a waffle rug on , then you could just swap him into a fly rug or light weight.

Just a thought if you intend to wash on a regular basis , it may pay to buy a Buccas power turnout lite , they cost a bit but you can put them on a damp horse as they wick away but are still waterproof on the outer , the most valuable rug for me as my boy lives out and if he happens to have a lesson in the rain or gets really sweaty riding out in the winter - no problem , i just pop it on and turn him out.

I would just turn im out naked after washing, he'll dry quick enough and so long as he has no health problems/it's not freezing is unlikely to become ill!
