I will try an explain fully.

I have a 14.1 NF mare, i need a 17inch saddle and she is currently in a 17inch synthetic saddle (saddler checked and fits fine)

I would like to get a leather saddle, as my synth was only temporary.....

I am only 5ft2 and in current saddle the side flaps look to long despite me riding at a decent length of stirrup..... (i dont ride long or short, stirrups hit my ankle bone)

But it needs to be black, needs to be 17inch, roughly medium wide but saddler will fit but i'd like the side flaps to be fairly small..... as in not very long or very wide side flaps....

Any suggestions....?

Edited to say must also have those tucky in things for stirrup leathers

Prestige will do custom flaps iirc. I *think* you can get short flaps on bates saddles. I have the same problem and have given up, I (at 5ft, with short legs :() cope in my 18" albion, it's far from perfect for me, but I cope (finding a jumping saddle to fit a friesian X is tricky at the best of times, so I'm not going to complain) . I also have a bates GP, which has standard flaps, and again, I cope, although that's better because I can move the knee rolls/thigh blocks around to suit my shortarsedness :p

Budget, really wouldnt want to be spending more than 900-1000 tops.

I meant to put that in original post....!

Big ask i know :(

A WOW saddle will solve your problem. I had flap especially made for me (5'2 on a big 16.2 WB) so my legs were actually in contact with a horse rather than a saddle flap. They adjusted the angle of the flap (for a jump saddle - so my knee met the block perfectly) and the length entirely to my specifications. Pricey though

Can't help with the saddle but got told recently that if you use the 'stirrup tucky in things' for tucking excess leather into, if you fall and get stuck in the stirrup it will come off at the bar but get stuck at the keeper and you're likely to be dragged. Those keepers were meant for surcingles i think not excess leather :-)

Ideal do a design to order service, might be worth contracting them to find out costs, it wasn't much more expensive when I got a new saddle.

In most saddles, in that situation, the keeper will come off the saddle, in those that don't the stirrup leather will pull through the keeper, even six stone of child will pull the excess leather through.

No, not a big ask. Try Matt Marlow of www.heritagesaddlery.co.uk. You can get one made to measure for less than your budget and he will make them will shorter flaps/deeper seat etc - basically whatever you want. I have two of his saddles, stirrup leathers, girth, reins etc. I recently compared it to a Bates saddle - brand new and to be honest, I wouldn't have given £200 for the Bates in comparison to one of Matt's. The quality is far better than saddles you would pay in excess of £1500 for.

I have short lower legs, I am 5ft3 and love my ideal event in hunt seat (the hunt seat is to accomodate my long upper leg and knee) definately worth getting a saddler to try an ideal for you

Saddle Company Saddle

ring them

^^^ Ditto ^^^

Saddle can be made to measure at no extra cost and this includes shorter saddle flaps if required. Call the HQ for further details but they'll recommend a fitter in your local area.

The GP/WH (incl m to m) is £625 new

I am the same height as you and also have a new forest I have a saddle company saddle for him and no problems with the saddle flaps being too long. He is in a 16inch saddle and 13.2.

Is your pony quite long in the back as 17inch is quite big for a pony of that size. My 13.2 is long in the back takes a 6ft rug but a 17 inch saddle would be too big for him.
