Hi all,

I know this is a bit of a random one but I've had to book some holiday time and would love to get some thoughts on riding Holidays in Europe this month. I'm a single pringle so it would be just for myself! I know this can be awkward as 'everyone' always travels as couples these days. Destination wise, I thinking Eastern Europe might be exciting. Or Spain / Portugal!

Any thoughts or suggestions on this? I'm more than happy to book flights etc separate, not just after packages :-)

Thank you

Another thing - it would have to be reputable with very high standards of horse welfare. Nothing would hurt me more than booking a few days at a place where they treat their horses badly.

Have a look at In The Saddle holidays. They do lots of european holidays and I do not think being a single is an issue. We have been with them twice but in Argentina and there were certainly a lot of single folks.

Not strictly a riding holiday, but you can ride while there...I love Iceland. You have to do your research or it can get expensive but it's very safe for a single traveller, the blue lagoon is worth the trip alone and you can go ride Icelandic horses at the tolt. Book it all through Iceland air, including the transfers and day trips.

My friends go to Los Alamos near Barbate in Spain every year. They have a great time.

Not really the right time of year for riding in Iceland but if you do ever get the chance to go I thoroughly recommend Eldhestar. I did they Landmannalaugar wilderness trek last year in June and it was fabulous and very well run.

I’ve also done a weeks riding holiday staying in Barbate about 10 years ago and that was great too Riding wise fab forest and beach riding but I didn’t like the company we used (Fantasia).

I went to Hacienda horses in Spain. Gorgeous horses and there were a few single holiday makers there. We booked direct and sorted our own flights (they can collect you from Malaga airport). Not sure they are open in December though.

I'm looking for advice/recommendations on solo riding holidays. It would ideally be this month as I've got some holiday time booked out. I'm thinking perhaps Eastern Europe or Spain/Portugal would be good options. Any thoughts? One extremely important caveat is there would have to be high standards of horse welfare. I wouldn't want to be contributing to riding camps which don't actually have their horses best interests at heart!

You could team up with MrMule Me!

I’ve done a few riding holidays through unicorn trails who I’ve always found to be really good. I did one in Croatia (called istria land and see I think) which was brilliant. Although again if you’re looking at this month I’m not sure if they’re open.

I have been on loads of horsey holidays as a single person! Its really easy, and many many of the other participants are there on their own (either single, or non horsey other halves)
I usually book with Zara's Planet who I find to be the best in terms of honest descriptions and matching you to the right holiday.
This time of year you can look at Spain or Portugal, though the weather could be a little unreliable, or consider a little farther afield like South Africa.
PM me if you want any advice / recommendations, a lot depends on your riding level and what you want to do (lessons / trail/ centre based)
Happy to help - I have probably been on too many!

I have been away with In The Saddle & Hoofin About, In the Saddle are expensive, Hoofin About are more affordable, there are always plenty of single people.
I did the Austrian snow ride with Hoofin About which I enjoyed & thought it was really good value for money, I had no concerns about the welfare of the horses, they all looked well & seemed happy & perky.
I will have a look at Zara's Planet - I've never heard of them & I'm planning on doing another riding holiday next year.

I think any UK based company will only book at places they feel happy with and have travelled with. I can recommend In the Saddle. You can phone up and talk to someone who has been there. I have been as a single person and it was fine so long as you are not the only English speaker. Check to see if the party is going to be all English or from other countries so you don't get a bit of a shock, as I did once, (not In the Saddle).

I was talking to the Ranch holidays man once and he said they visit all their ranches in the USA and sometimes have arrived, taken a look around and driven away as they didn't like what he saw. Having said that, different cultures and countries have different practices which may not always suit the English sensibilities, but it is all part of going to a different country.

Have a look at Los Alamos, Spain (In the Saddle). Every time I have been the majority of guests were single. It is run by English people and really do look after their horses and guests very well.

If you contact In the Saddle there is usually someone in the office who has actually done the ride you are considering. I have been on riding holidays to Iceland and Coast to Coast in Scotland and had a wonderful time on my own.

No holiday suggestions to make, but can I nominate this as 'second most misleading current thread title', beaten only by 'interesting things to do with cauliflower' over in the Club House.

Hope you have a great holiday, wherever you end up.

Haha, yes quite! But I can add to the thread with some experience. I've just been out with In The Saddle and they did seem to have a good range of destinations and knew what they were talking about. I've not been to Europe though. I know people who love the Spanish getaways.
