This poor horse

My friend and I ride past a field with 8 horses in and had noticed some of them looked a bit thin, one looked quite poor so we decided to go back for a better look on foot so we could get closer, we were horrified when we got up close to this poor little horse and called the World Horse welfare but was told that it wouldn't be seen until the end of next week! we then called the RSPCA who I believe went out to the horse this morning but the horse is still there! I cant believe its not yet been taken away.

The other horses are not that thin but you can see their ribs, they have very little grass and the fields are full of ragwort. also there is a big sign on the gate that this horse owner does natural horsemanship!!
 
I know thats really shocking, and im surprised no ones reported it before, but should you really be taking photos of other peoples horses and posting them over a forum?
 
Its possible they'll have to investigaste and see if there are any underlying treatments for this, if horse is being treated by a vet etc. It could possibly have been recently purchased? Have they recently appeared in the field?

That is just a rack of bones and hopefully something will be done for the poor creature, especially if there's tons of ragwort and no grass. Not sure why anyone would advertise that they do natural horsemanship on a gate though.

Keep in touch and let us know what happens with it.
 
Do you know how long they've been there? They look to have a reasonable amount of grass (I've seen fields with much less than that) and the grazing looks pretty clean from the angles of the photos so maybe they've been rescued already from somewhere else or this particular horse has a problem and is already under the care of a vet, hence not been removed.
 
The RSPCA will be in touch with an update if they have been out to see the horse. If it is receiving treatment there should be a notice on the gate to advise - it may have been recently rescued from elsewhere (doubtful but possible).

If not, then it needs removing and immediate management from someone that understands recovery nutrition so as not to overload the system.

Please keep chasing this - shocking! :mad:
 
Can you e-mail the pic to WHW. They receive hundreds of calls about thin horses who are not thin at all so prob dont prioritise them. I am sure if they saw how thion this one is they would be out sooner.

Let us know how it goes
 
God knows how this is still standing up!! The RSPCA should let you know the outcome of the visit as you were the initial contact - chase them up .

No it isn't and this is exactly what kick started help for Carrot and Spud so well done you.

Can you ask around for a bit more info on owner? It looks to be a bit of a yard so i'm guessing more than one person has seen this horse? Therefore could be a bit of background is needed before steaming in.

But, you def needed to get the ball rolling :)

Maybe if someone had taken them of your poor horse a few months ago it could of prevented her from looking the same way, albeit she wasnt quite as bad.

I dont think you are in any position to make comments like that on weight and other people interfereing and taking photos. It might save this ponys life.
 
I have spoken to a few other horsey people in the area and that horse has been there for about 3 years, I guess no one else has walked up as close as we did to get a good look.

Yes the fields always look poo picked but I have never seen food out there.

Even if there is a good explaination for the poor horse to be in this state, surely it is better to report and find out, rather than do nothing about it. Well done OP.

Wilson that horse will not last much longer I would think:mad: Well done to you for taking notice. What part of the country are you in? Can you contact a local vet at all? They might see the picture and contact the welfare authorities to encourage them to come sooner.

I agree, i wasnt saying it was wrong to take photos of someone elses horse, because maybe someone on here knows this horse and can help, or knows if it has any underlying problems. I made that comment because i remember a few threads on here where people have taken photos of other peoples horses and members kicked off about it. Although, they were no where near this bad, i do hope this horse is helped and recovers well.

One suspects this particular poster lives in fear of someone doing the same to her in winter...

If the horse has recently been rescued, the owner is unlikely to object since both owner and OP's primary concerns are the horse's welfare. If the horse is a welfare case now, then I can't say that I'm particularly concerned whether it's a breach of the owner's rights anyway (which I don't think it is).
 
Any people on another thread were whingeing about a dog who had been dyed pink for a charity walk. I think this is something that requires investigation and not pink westies. iIt may well be a rescue or one that needs rescuing but does require intervention. Too many people in life don't "want to get involved" or believe that "someone else will sort it". What harm can an email with pics to those suggested do?

Well if i recall correctly it did happen to her!! Admittadly SHE took the photos herself and posted them, thinking how well her horse was looking, when it reality it was another poor old hat rack. Disgusting.
 
Jesus christ these hat racks are popping up every week, lets hope something is done sooner rather than later, where abouts are they in the country?

That horse needs help. For now hers has been helped.

So with that in mind is it worth us all getting in contact with someone enmass once we know where this one is of course.
 
That horse is in a desperate state but there is enough grass in the field for the horses not to have to eat the ragwort. And tbf, there is nowhere near as much ragwort as I was expecting from the description. My guess is that there is an underlying reason for the condition that this horse is in.
Well done for instigating an investigation, OP.
 
We had a horse at my old yard which was recovering from grass sickness and he looked very similar to this. The owners were really careful about which paddock they put him so he wasn't in full view of any passers by in case they thought he was being neglected.

Whether this horse is actually being neglected or whether there is an underlying problem, i feel really sorry for it and hope something is sorted out soon.
 
Am amazed the poor animal is able to stand.

Confusing though as paddock looks maintained.

It may have grass sickness or something and is being treated but either way it needs investigating.
