This weather is horrendous

I keep asking myself if it's just me getting bogged down with it all or it is this winters weather as yes Im seriously questioning horse ownership atm especially as I think I have the wrong horse for me too !!!

I realised today that we had 2 months worth of rain some time around 20 September last year and then it hasn't really stopped since. Apart from the odd spell of blue skies and frosty mornings (3 days?) its been grey, wet and depressing. I'm pretty resilient but 5 months of this has really got me down.

Torrential all morning and flooding everywhere again.

Last week the fields had started to dry. Wet by field entrances. Saturday was 14 degrees. Sunny. Then hit with awful rain that evening. Bitterly cold Sunday. More rain in the evening and Monday morning. Yesterday was vile. Fields now horrendous. I’m turning out. And bringing back in after yard chores. With four, it’s exhausting. Lost all motivation to ride. Although lovely Saturday hack in the sun. Felt like spring. Then crashed back down. Every muscle in my back aches. I’ve struggled this year.

Horses were out all day today and still were t waiting to come in just before 5 so the grass is definitely growing! I’m bringing them in at night for a few more weeks but if this continues they will be back out 24/7. I can definitely see light at the end of the tunnel. 😎 🤞

Our horses live permanently out. I honestly don't know how anyone is saying this winter has been horrendous. Compared to last year, it's been a walk in the park. Last year was the hardest winter ever. Knee deep in mud for months. Incessant rain week after week. This winter has been largely dry with lots of bright skies and dry fields. I'm in a wet bit of Cheshire too. The forecast for this week is glorious.

It may not have been horrendous for some but it's not just about rain .A succession of named storms all in a few weeks here we have had storm after storm 3 in quick succession fences destroyed by the wind and fallen trees and difficulty accessing replacement panels etc to secure areas in the garden to secure our dogs Being without power for 5 days is horrendous being battered by the wind and rain when you are trying to secure fields when trees are down over fences is horrendous and very wearing.
Thankfully we now look to have a settled week or so so we can get on and finish the work needed and hopefully get the normal land management work done not just battle to repair and replace stuff that has been damaged.

It’s not just you. I feel like the last slog of winter is always the worst but this is particularly bad. The gateway into my horse field (trash paddock at this point) is absolutely horrendous, but I darent move them elsewhere as that will get trashed too!

My landlord asked what we are doing with the small area/wide path that leads to the stables (pure mud at this point). My husband diplomatically mentioned reseeding in the spring. I thought…trying not to break a leg every time I walk up or down it with hay/feed/water/horses!

Honestly the mud is just awful this year isn’t it. Also not sure if it’s just the field I’m using currently but the mud this year smells so bad. Like a really swampy smell - it’s extra gross!
