I love Cleveland Bays. I don't own one but if I could keep my 7/8 bred colt entire and had some land I would get him a couple of CB girlfriends and breed good, big British sport horses.
I know this sounds awful but i've had dealings with 2 in the past and they both were how do i put it........ dumb! Had nothing going for them but like others have said i prob didn't meet the 2 best ones-dont think they were well bred. They are however lovely looking horses so i can see some peoples passion for them.

Sitting on the fence here for my sins but -
When people talk/write about natives, it is almost a given that they just mean native ponies! Very few even think or know of native horses which is why CBs are overlooked so much.

I agree that it only seems to incorporate native ponies.
I haven't read the article properly yet, but I believe the emphasis was on native x TBs making stronger, short coupled horses, which would exclude types like the CB and Shire for cross breeding.
I don't think it was personal.

I know you hate me saying it (red rag to a bull comes to mind!) but personally, the further away from a CB, the happier I am; all the ones I have known have been bargy, opinionated and moody; I put them on the same level as a shetland and hate anything to do with them.
no offence as you obviously must have had dealings wiv nice cbs, but all the ones i have owned or had dealings wiv hav been the nastiest stubborn horses 2walk this earth n thats including the xbreds
I'm another one that is going to have to defend the CB. To be fair I have never known a pure breed but my horse is a CB x Arab so there should be no hope for him.
However, he truly is a fantastic horse. Yes he can be a bit bolshy (or strong), but no more than any other breed IMO. He has a fantastic jump in him, is very good at dressage (rider not so good though) and this year we are competing at Intro level and doing some County level Workers (provided no more injuries).
I think they make a great all round horse, and would not hesitate to have another one.
