Following on from my straw v shavings post a couple of people said they used Flax on rubber matting. Where can I get this Flax from and how much is it a bag and how much do I need to use? Sorry for all the questions but am really interested in finding a cheaper aternative to straw and shavings? (including smaller muck heap?) I have e-mailed Thorobed and asked them for a quote but they only deliver 400 bales at a time!! (that would last me a while me thinks)!!!

I get my from thorogoods but if you ring aroud your local suppliers they will tell you. Try calling Equisorb and asking where there nearest distributer is. Also they will deliver a pallett at a time 36 bales. I used 8 to put bed down ad then 1 a week occasionally I out 2 in. But i now buy 5 a month from the feed merchants. One thing to watch is if they sell them in 120litre bags or 20kg bag. The 20kg bags are lots bigger I sed 7 or 8 of the 120l ones and the price was not much different.

i posted re flax - i get from local agent in herts so no use - is 5.99 a bag (compared to 7.10 for shavings, everything v expensive here!). I used 3 or 4 to start bed off then one a week. Really would recommend it.
