Thoroughbred rehabilitation centre

We have one from there....the rehoming process is very through.

When we went up to see the horses we had a ride on there school master to see if we were compatible with having ex racer. Then my sister tried two and they both didn't click. The other one they was going to put her on had mud fever and on box rest so we couldn't try him that time. My sister fell I love with him and we knew he was the one.

We went back two weeks later to try him and he came hem with us two weeks after that.

She will have a yard check as the have a few things that they want as standard, like no barbed wire in field, has to have a stable access over winter etc.....and then once approved the local trc checker will do a three month, nine month (I think) then it's yearly check.
I'm lucky in the fact out our one has a horse on my yard.

Nicky and the staff are fabulous and they are always helpful if you have a problem. They adore the horses and if they don't think you are tight for one they will not let you have them even if you want than particular horse. There is a closed fb page for the loaners so we can all catch up.

If you or your friend wants any more info pm me and I will give you my fb details so you can see our trc boy.

I had one from them for almost 2 years. Process was easy and they were really helpful. Sadly had to return my horse due to unforeseen circumstance but wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anybody.

Is this the one in Oxfordshire? i tried one there ( had to pay a donation ) but he wasnt for me and the others there all had some kind of tendon injury so i looked elsewhere.

No it's up in Lancaster, the TRC don't charge a donation to try them out. Only a one off loaners fee when you get the horse.

Just another question (thanks for your original replies) my friend has heard nothing back from the TRC? It's been nearly two weeks now and nothing. How long did you have to wait?

Nevertheless... they are doing a fantastic and much needed job in helping ex racers whether they manage to find a suitable home or not.

I've heard positive things about the TRC and I know someone who competes in dressage on a horse from the TRC and she always recommends them

Unfortunately she never heard back from them after her initial application, it's a real shame but she's instead just brought an ex racehorse through a private home xx

I'm local to them, they have a pretty grim reputation in the local horsey area! I know of a woman who took a horse on from their she had to buy a brand new saddle as well as the loan fee, then the horse was either too lame to ride or too nuts to ride, she sent it back after 18 months having been able to ride it 3 times!! The yard manager can be extremely rude which I learnt when my instructor was hiring the school

We had to buy all new rugs and tack, its stated that the loan is for the horse not its wardrobe.

Also what you discribed could be any situation with a new horse.

A.friend got one from there, he turned out to be wrong they had him back gave him another assessment but it turned out he would not be suitable for any rehome and was not happy so was pts. It was the best thing for the horse.

Op I would give them a ring, just enquire if they have revived it.

If your loaning private or not I'd expect anyone to buy tack, same as if you both a horse that came without...

Think what I was saying not that the horse should come with everything, obviously that's not reasonable and when taking a horse on there is an expectation to buy it's gear. But the centre specified a brand new made to measure £900 saddle!! I think when people are willing to re home horses and give them a second chance especially given many of the horses have injury/lameness or specific problems I think it's a shame be so specific in requesting a brand new made to measure saddle. Yes that's probably the best for the horse in the long run but what happens if you don't get on with the horse or the horse is lame and you have to send it back. Your left with a used saddle with a much lesser value. I think it potentially could be a bit of a put off for rehomers. It would certinally put me off, there are good second hand saddles on the market and saddles to fit all budgets with are perfectly good saddles. I know other charities don't have such demands having rehomed a couple of horses from elsewhere myself.

That's strange as we were told what saddle to get at all. Our boy is in a wintec. I know they have been included with designing a saddle but none of the other loaners I've met have ever said they were told to get this saddle or that saddle when they re homed them.

They never replied to my application either and I followed it up with a call. I'm pretty sure nothing on my application would have raised alarm bells other than the fact I am down south.

Dear All,
Thank you for all the positive comments regarding The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre. We would also like to address some of the other issues raised. As you may be aware the TRC are celebrating their 25th Anniversary in 2016 and have recently re-branded and restructured to become the British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre. As part of the re-brand a full review was completed on all areas of the operation and this included changes to some of the areas you have mentioned, in particular responding in a timely fashion to all enquiries and loan applications. Furthermore, the TRC would encourage and support loaners to find suitable saddles for horses and do not expect any loaner to purchase a new saddle for one of their horses. The TRC would be delighted to discuss more about our work and our future plans or indeed if you are in the area by all means contact our office manager on enquiries@thetrc.co.uk and we would be happy to show you around the yard and meet our horses. Thank you so much for all your support - The TRC
