I have a 8yo thoroughbred mare, in December she suddenly started dropping weight, we got the vet out as soon as we noticed, vet came did blood tests, urine samples and checked for worms they all came back negative and the vet has told me they can't find anything wrong. I can't seem to put the weight back on her she is on Alfa-A original and Dodson and horrell build up mix she also is on codlivine suppliment, she has this 3 times a day as well as hayledge is there any thing else I can do it is tearing me apart seeing her in this way :(

I found build up mix didn't work on mine. I switched to calm and condition, plus equilibra, alfa beet, and equijewel, and a non molassed alfa, which has worked. I also like linseed as find this helps keep condition on. We went through this a few years ago, and decided ours were also getting cold. You feed haylage, but is it ad lib? Also, has he been scoped for ulcers? This won't show up in blood tests etc.

She shouldn't need Codlivine as well as Build up if she is getting the recommended amount as it is a complete feed? So at best a waste of money & she may actually be 'overdosing' on the vits & mins.
My T.B had a sugar allergy & positively blossomed after changing to a 'forage diet'. Build up is very high in sugars & cereals which personally I like to avoid if possible.
Have you considered Healthy Tummy? It has a high DE, high oil & is mollases & cereal free. She would need about the same amount in weight or (slightly less) and you could ditch the Alfa A orig.
If palatability is an issue then I find adding speedibeet makes it irresistable!
Feeding larger meals so leaving her with a trug along side her hay is also not a problem as it is entirely forage & oil.

At the moment i'm feeding 2kgs of HT, 500 gms DW of Speedibeet, 400gms of micronised linseed & 8gms of Lysine & adlib hage to a 14.2 NF who is recovering from a virus with excellent results.

My TB mare can be in the rudest of health but after weaning she goes like a hat rack (we've tried all methods of weaning and it doesn't matter one jot, the result is always the same so I'm used to it now but it was worrying at first)
The best results we've had with her are Baileys Stud Cubes, oats and either sugar beet or soaked grass nuts along with ad lib haylage. I've tried various things like linseed, barley, Alfa A Oil (she doesn't like chop of any kind) Barley Rings and so on which made little difference but the stud nuts seem to do the trick.

PS, I add brewers yeast too as that's a good aid for digestion which all helps.

Its not Linseed & Soya oil you want, its micronised linseed & Fullfat soya ( which is already in Build up) Both VERY different to feeding the oil.

I have been doing a lot of reading up on feeds/ supplements all day. I have read that feeding equi jewel is good for putting weight back on am thinking on trying her on that
