Thoroughbreds & Cobs????

I just know this is going to be a stupid question and will probably make for a very short thread but I've just got to ask...

what breed of horse is a "thoroughbred"? It follows on from the favourite & non favourite breed threads where amoungst breeds such as Fresian, Appaloosa, Shire, Halflinger etc. some said that their favourite was thoroughbred. Is it just me being dense or wouldn't any breed that wasn't crossed with another be "thoroughbred"?

Also, and related I suppose, what makes a Cob? Is it just a stocky horse, a specific breed or a mix?

Thoroughbred:

They are a specific breed - all racehorses are thoroughbreds (or arabs if being pedantic!).

Cob:

usually a 'type' apart from the Welsh Cob which is a specific breed.

A thoroughbred is a breed. Any breed that isn't crossed with another is a pure bred 'whatever'.

A cob is a specific 'type' of horse, although some specific breeds carry the cob prefix.

Nothing, same animal - two names.

Gypsy Vanner is the same as a Cob, except that they have a different name and usually a much larger pricetag

AIUI... Gypsy Vanner, Gypsy Cob or Irish Cob are pretty interchangeable names for a type of horse... Solid shaped, hairy beasties...

Our Section D baby is a Welsh Cob... So breed rather than type...

Thoroughbred is a distinct breed... Same way that you'd think of a Shire or a Cleveland Bay etc...
