My oh's horse has developed a large thoroughpin, which we attributing to the hard ground. He is 100% sound.

A couple of questions whilst we debate whether to call the vet:

- are thoroughpins purely a cosmetic issue, or a pre cursor for a more serious hock condition?

- is it safe to keep him in work (after a gentle hack yesterday it seemed to have reduced, but back up this morning)?

His main job is as a hunter in the winter, with mainly hacking and fun rides at this time of year, with an occasional pop over some sj's.

Thanks

Absolutely fine to keep him in work. They are usually cosmetic and don't cause pain/lameness etc unless they get so big they start affecting mobility.

Hosing it off regularly might reduce the swelling or if it gets worse you vet might suggest draining it.

Thanks and similar advice to the research that we have done on it.

Will start to cold hose after exercise as routine.

One of my eventers popped up a fair size one after a run on summer ground. The vet had a look and advised cold hosing, walking out/turning out and a special boot that he sold me.

It was like an old lady's surgical appliance is brown nylon, zipped firmly on the hock overnight with a hard ball pressing into each side of the swelling.

Within a couple of weeks of this regime it had completely disappeared, and after a couple of weeks bringing work level back up, she went back to full work and it never did return.

I bothered as I have known a couple of horses that started with them and were not treated, and afer a couple of years they did get large enough to interfere with the joint.
