I have always liked owning a synthetic saddle but I am selling my wintec because I need a 17 inch.

I know nothing about Thorowgood saddles and I am confused by all the different types and the fish system (?!).

My current cob x takes a wide (red gullet) in a wintec, what should I be looking for in a Thorowgood? She is 6 still growing by the looks of things.

How do they differ from wintecs and what do people think of them?

I prefer them hugely to wintecs, ignore the fish system as it's pretty useless! Obv there will be horses who the tree shape doesn't suit, but I was v impressed with the one we had. Find a saddler near you who stocks some of the different thorrowgood models and have them out, they will be able to see if one would fit and the appropriate gullet size to use. Def not a DIY job getting it right!

If you can find yourself a good saddler who knows synthetics, they should be able to explain everything you need to know. My saddler knows both Wintecs and Thorowgoods inside out and talked us through everything, firstly when he fitted our eBay purchased Wintec (fitted our mare perfectly at the time, when she was fit) and then our new Thorowgood (which then fitted perfectly as she never got back to full fitness).

A good saddler should be able to bring out a selection of Thorowgood saddles and gullets and be able to show you the difference and find if a certain combination fits :)

have you looked on the throwgood website? lots of info there.

I found the thorowgoods nicer than the wintecs, and due to the FISH you can "tweek" the fit of them, I never thought i would end up doing so, but as the horse changed condition, the thick or thin FISH were changed around or taken out quite often, changing the gullet was not so important, and i think i only changed it once on a youngster who -not surprisingly- widened out whilst maturing.

My cob has the xx wide thorowgood GP. The saddler says the GP is better than the cob version, not sure why. He was xwide but I check my saddle fairly regularly and I do love this saddle. I really like the girth straps because you can remove them when they get worn. I've never changed the fish, never needed to.

I like how you can adapt the saddle to fit a youngster. Mine has changed shape a lot since I got him four years ago.

I'm going to check out the website, thanks guys.

Only problem is there aren't any saddlers who deal with them in Ireland. And even if they were, the only call out I could ever get was going to cost 100 euro. So frustrating!
