Thorowgood saddles - fish system AND Changeable Gullet??

Hi All,

Please can you tell me, can thorowgood saddles have a changeable gullet and the fish system?

I have just bought a second hand T4 HW GP saddle after being promised it has a changeable gullet (the 3D version).

I was given the fish inserts though, so does that mean it hasn't got a changeable gullet!? Really worried now that I've spent money on a saddle that I won't be able to get fitted to my horse! (This may be the 4th non-fitting saddle I have to add to my collection!!)

Yes. Gullets and the fish system are completely different things.

Gullets alter the width of the saddle whereas the fish was designed to 'bulk' the saddle up if your horse lost or gained muscle/fat.

I think fish is quite an old thing now as I don't think it worked very well. Certainly for the small while I had a T6 saddle, it had both the changeable gullets and fish.
 
Fish inserts are under the flap I think, whereas the gullet will be at the head of the saddle. If it is changeable you will see screw heads where you can take it out.
 
You can tell by looking at the saddle, it will have 2 little bolts that you undo with an allan key, the material then pulls back and exposes the gullet bar.

You see these little bolts by turning the saddle upside down and looking at the underside of the pommel. No bolts means you can't change gullet.
 
Oh fingers crossed then!

I turned it upside down and it has got two screws by the pommel but then the lady gave my the fish inserts so that caused me to panic a bit!!!

Saddler coming tomorrow so don't know whether I need to tell him to bring a new one with him as well just in case this second hand one isn't changeable!

Can't really afford a brand new one though!!
 
It will be changeable if it has the two bolts. If u have ano allen key open it and put your mind at rest!
When you pull back the material to expose the gullet, you'll see that the gullet bars are held in place by a further 4 screws that again require ano allan key.

Good luck I hope it fits, I have 4 Thorowgood saddles, 2 are T4 saddles and I find them great, better than the new T6/8 models :)
