At the moment I have my three year old in a working hunter saddle company, which I love BUT it just doesn't take up my leg very well as I have long thighs and I ride quite short. Anywho I went down to my local tack shop and had a chat to the saddle fitter there, I sat in the GP saddle company saddle (pony has a 16" saddle atm, but could happily take a 16.5") but it didn't really make much difference to my legs - knees were still over the flaps

. So he recommended that I sat in a GP thorowgood saddle, even though it wasn't as comfy as the saddle company saddle, it did take up my leg alot better and was relatively comfy. Apparently in the new year Thorowgood are bringing out pony sized saddles in the leather (or leather type saddle???

) which has the adjustable gullet instead of using the Fish system which appeals to me. I would love for the saddle company to bring out a jump pony saddle, but sadly I dont think that will happen

But getting back on track now, opinions on the thorowgood saddles please

Thorowgood are excellent saddles - well designed and good quality, plus a good price.

However Saddle Company will make you any saddle you ask for. They do a pony length saddle (16-16.5) with full sized adult flaps. They could easily make you one with jump flaps. I don't think they do a specific 'jumping saddle' tree however (incidently the SC is the same tree as the thorowgoods - the man who runs SC used to work for Thorowgood).

I have one of the leather jump saddle and it is lovely, so comfy and well made. Have been very pleased with it and has fit 3 completely different horses (WC TB WB)

Fab!

I had a second hand old synthetic style one for my boy that was supposed to be for afew months however it lasted 2 years and would've gone on much longer but I wanted new,
I had the thorowgood griffin which again was a brill saddle. This one lasted me about 6 years (riding 6 days a week any weather to hack/jump/ even dressage shows!)

I had my current one last year for Christmas, its the T6 leather look one with fish. Ive always used a cover on it and it still looks like new!
I will never use anything else on this horse now

In my experience the Thorowgood are ok for the relatively low price but they also don't last very long. I bought a new one for our former broodmare who we re-baked to hack and the Thorowgood saddle came apart at the stitching within a couple of years. Given she was hacked lightly twice a year I don't think that's really the quality I would have expected.

I guess you get what you pay for..

Well tbh I wasn't going to keep my saddle company saddle for life, nor would I keep a thorowgood saddle. I just want something which takes up my leg abit better

, and which is easily adjustable and light for my forever changing shape three year old

I have them on both my horses as fit beautifully but took a while for me to get used to. My high withered T4 one is more like a jumping saddle so would be great for you. Very supportive as you have large range of knee blocks

The Thorowgood T4 cob is the only saddle that really fits Bodey well, and believe me I’ve tried everything. But I really rate them as a saddle much better then the Wintecs IMO.

Cheers everyone

I'd have a long look at all the different sites on the net before buying as the one I had was expensive on e bay!
It took me days to find the cheapest but I got it for only £250 I think as I found a shop that had just the size I wanted left

I must say I have found they last- the 1 I had 6 years was wearing on the nearside girthstraps only- seat, knee rolls etc were all fine. I could've had it repaired but it was Christmas so I brought it with my money!

My old, old one ended up with had in lol where my knees went but it was 2nd or 3rd hand when I had it (going back about 10 yrs) but it was sooo comfy and the materials have improved loads since then.

I think I'll be getting one for my youngster when he's older.

measles, perhaps it was an older saddle or you were just unlucky?

I have a thorowgood T4 cob which i've had nearly 4yrs and still looks in really good condition and it fits my girly beautifully. I've even considered getting one of the dressage saddles, but will have to save some money first.
I got mine as my girl was rising 4 and i wanted something that i could alter as she changed shape and it is doing us proud, would definately recommend them.

I'm not all too keen on Wintecs though
