the beeb website also points out that there are two high voltage electricity pylons that may well be pushed by force of water into the flood if the dam bursts

therefore as water is a good conductor of electricity - animals in the water if the worst happens could be electrocuted.

Shoring up a dam in these conditions will not be easy and they are pumping water out atm to relieve the pressure. I'm a chartered engineer and what they are trying will not be easy as the shoring will have to be done into ground that is sodden - so they'll have to go down a long way to find solid against which to bolster the dam.

if you can help to move the horses (and other farm animals as well) then please do

On the radio they have said that they are considering carrying out controlled explosions to break the dam, but in a direction which would cause marginally less damage than where the dam is threatening to burst anyway.
They must be seriously worried to be considering such drastic action as damge limitation.
Would would have thought that it was less than 12months ago that we were all worrying about our resevoirs being empty?!

The problem is everyone else's fields are flooded round here too, so its knowing where to put other animals, im 10mins from the dam but the other side to where my friends horses are so it wont effect us directly if it busts, but we are completly flooded also, it seems she is getting plenty of help from the people who can still get to there fields, it will be terrible though if it breaks. There is a livery yard 2 mins from her on the other side of the motorway with about 30 horses, they are hoping there yard is to high to flood even though all there fields are under water. You cant drive anywhere round here and all major roads are closed.

God, it's awful, isn't it? I wonder if they can shut the power off to that section so if the worst does happen, at least people won't have to worry about the electricity.

We're in Chesterfield, just a few miles south of Sheffield and things are just as bad here. I had to move our horses out the fields yesterday morning as the river was flowing over the top of the bridges and pieces of the field were breaking away into the river.
Its seriously scary and if I could help I would do but honestly things are no better here. My OH is a police officer (he was on BBC last night searching for the missing, now dead, boy) He is on emergency standby as the dam is at a critical stage now.

am listening to radio sheffield on the internet and a woman is talking about the possibility of having to release the horses from the fields onto the (deserted) roads so they have a chaance to save themselves. and rounding them up afterwards

im a few miles from sheffield and the rain was scarey here even though it wasnt as bad.roads flooded people stranded taking 4 hours to do 20min journeys...
our fields are were really wet even though they drained well onto the roads.they are actually not too bad now.
horses are stuck in alot to save the land.fair dos i suppose but they are all so bored, its been back to winter turnout times.
